It used to be that the Labor party represented workers but that notion seems to have been lost. One of the serious crisis issues in Australia is that of affordable rentals with more and more people living in tents, shacks, cars and vans. A major pressure in driving rents up has been negative gearing (tax breaks) for those with money buying more than one house. Prime Minister Albanese and Treasurer Chalmers both own two houses. Something like 67% of parliamentarians own more than one house and about 34% own multiple houses. Albanese and Chalmers have declared they will not stop the negative gearing tax breaks.
It seems that so many in government live comfortably and no longer identify with struggling working class Australians albeit that Chalmers has said he understands the difficulties. But evidently not enough to take major steps to change the trend to ever more wealthy people and an increasing mass living near the povery line. Pensioners included.
