Hello. What are some things I should know before coming to Jakarta?

Sure, it gets declared. Food, $400 or whatever. I just had a delicious everything bagel, with Philly cream cheese, smoked salmon and very thin sliced onion. So delicious!

I worry more about how a dish tastes, not if it has parsley sprinkled on top.

Hello. What are some things I should know before coming to Jakarta?

My wife just flew in last night from the US. I was able to change her award ticket on the way back, and get my favorite luggage allowance, 3 bags at 32kg each. 30kg of cold items, ham, cheese, carnitas, butter, Philly cream cheese, and lots more. I was a bit concerned that imigrasi had marked...

    Mobil Rakyat...new cars

I invested about 25% of my kids education fund into various EV companies. BYD, Li, XPEV, NIO, in the Chinese realm. One Vietnamese, plus Ford, Rivian, and Lucid in the US. It’s a mixed bag, as some like BYD have really risen. Others like Lucid, Rivian, and Nio have had a pretty rough road. I’m...

    Skype alternative.

Well, it’s an add on line to a business group. Costs me about $25 a month. Includes a little data, can get free “slow” data after I hit my cap. No extra costs to get texts from US. It does have some sort of international plan that is part of the business line. I did try to use a Mint phone for...

    Skype alternative.

I don’t need a skype number, as I have a US Tmobile phone that I can use in Indonesia. (Mostly for account verification codes, and texts) The first time I tried to activate MS Teams, it didn’t work. Tried a couple of weeks later, and no problem.

    Collections and memorabolia

I always pick something up on my travels. Perhaps old currency, coins, hotel key cards, wooden keepsakes.

    Jabodetebak floods

Two relatives in Bekasi both have considerable flooding inside their houses. It’s gotten worse the last 6-7 years. They say because there is less green areas to absorb water. It was a 1.5 meter tall river in the street. My wife’s cousin went back this afternoon to help his mom out. He couldn’t...

    Skype alternative.

I use Skype multiple times a day. A month ago I was forced to upgrade to a newer version, but once I switched, no need to login.

    Skype alternative.

That’s strange. We use Skype for texting each other, with occasional calls, in the US and Indonesia. I haven’t gotten any notifications that it was stopping service next month.

New Electronic Indonesian Passport, no physical visa needed for travel to Japan?

My wife renewed her Indonesian passport a few months ago. She got the most expensive option, which is supposed to allow up to 15 days in Japan, without having to get a physical entry visa. Seems you have to register your passport within 14 weeks of your trip. Has anyone with an Indonesian...

Extortion and corruption at Soekarno-Hatta Airport led to the dismissal of ALL immigration staff at the airport.

Thankfully, I’ve never had any problems with them asking for bribes at CGK. Only run into them asking once, more than a decade ago, at the old Medan airport.

    Unlimited KITAP

I lived in Jakarta for over a year in a small apartment in 2011-2012. Before that we sometimes stayed in upscale kosts for a few weeks at a time. Never felt unsafe in Jakarta at all.

Butcher shop in Jakarta with extensive pork selection?

My wife makes nice meatballs with a mix of ground beef and pork. I enjoy it more than just a total beef or pork meatball.
