How much does furniture actually cost in Jakarta.

My husband and I are trying to figure out the most cost effective way to minimally furnish our apartment (we move in September) and I was looking mostly at Ikea because they deliver, but a friend of mine says we can buy from a street store for less than IKEA. Most of the furniture I'm looking at from IKEA is like 50 bucks or less and we could furnish our entire 2br apartment for us and our child including all the little extra stuff like small bathroom items and children's sized items and whatnot for like 1500 USD.

Would small but sturdy furniture cost less at a street store and would it be able to be delivered? We're super concerned with space and efficiency as our apartment is very small. Mostly just wondering at what the cost of a bed, couch, wardrobe, and super small dining set would theoretically cost.

Or there is the classifieds. Maybe some bule leaving. But most have already gone

The last sofa I bought from a local store in Jakarta came with its own resident mouse.

Just throwing that out there for consideration.

Oh my Lord that is not a house guest I'd like to have, haha. Well, looks like IKEA wins.

We found a lot of great items from Expats leaving when we bought our house 4-5 years ago. Much higher quality than Ikea, certainly. 0 mice included.

I guess if it’s not a long term stay, then it may not matter.

I think we bought 3 King or Queen beds with nice frames, fridge, stove, water cooler, sofa, benches, banquet, tables, dining room set, bookcases and huge kitchen island with storage. A lot of teak items. About $2500 total I think, enough to mostly furnish a 200 sm house.

Nice furniture can be found in the malls, e.g. in shops like Informa. They deliver too. Handy stuff for kitchen, bathroom etc. can be found in Ace Hardware or Mitra10.

I will definitely be looking at the classified then!

Don't get scared because one person has a story with a mouse. Iam sure there are a lot of good local stores in Jakarta with good quality furniture. We live in Batam and we surly bought around 20-30 pieces in local stores without any problem and I don't see why it should be different in Jakarta.
Still be careful though, you will probably have a mouse (or worse) in your house sooner or later anyway, except if you live in an apartment or something like that I guess.
So yeah, don't be scared and look around in stores. Iam a big fan of IKEA for certain things, but their high quality stuff also has its price. Overall I feel like furniture isn't much cheaper here than in many western countries. Like many other things these days. Only work force is still cheap I guess....

Ps: sorry, I just read that you really live in an apartment. Still, better to keep all holes locked.😂

I think we'll probably get certain things from IKEA because we only have like 72sqm for the 3 of us and I just want some small stuff, but I'm gonna check out some local spots maybe for maybe a wardrobe and living room set perhaps. It would be nice to have some teak furniture. I was looking online to try to get a sense of things and it really did look like some of the mid-priced teak stuff was as expensive as the low end Ikea stuff, so it really is like a very similar price point.

When we lived in Jakarta our choice for furniture was Rataan. Less cost than most other choices. We got it from Rataan House in S Jakarta. 10 years later we still have some. Once out of Jakarta we went with Jati, teak. The thing here is, out of Jakarta.

Jakarta prices are crazy high compared to areas that are not Jakarta. We paid half of what they ask in Jakarta for the same or simular items. Of course, that goes for about everything including food.

This isn't a great time to find Bule's that are leaving. With the down turn if foreign workers in the petrolium field and of course the pandemic, most have already left.

There are a couple ladies that pit out a regular email about their catering business and they include classified items people submit to them. Sorry, I can not remember the name but someone else in here should and can share it with you. Good luck.

Well, I guess my worst case scenario is IKEA, which I already made an online list of and can see what the have at the Alam Sutera store, so atleast we have that, haha.

I think you are talking about upper crust? Not sure if they are still active though.

Upper Crust

My friend just bought a sofa from these guys: https://urbanquarter.com/
She seems pretty happy with it. I'm in the market for a sofa and some furniture myself as I'm moving to a semi-furnished place in a few weeks. I'm prob going to end up buying from Ikea for the sheer ease of doing business with them.

I'm a little hesitant about buying second-hand soft furniture here - I think a resident sofa mouse would be the least of my concerns - there are lots of other smaller beasties that can come along in a sofa - bedbugs/ mites. I had a friend who had some sort of mite infestation that was so bad she ended up throwing almost everything away. She had a lovely sofa set which I'm sure was sold onto some unsuspecting customer.
