Thankfully south bali is still pretty well stocked ,but I can imagine sometime in the near future certain items will disappear .

Noodles are hard to find in Jakarta.

In Australia it seems some households have got toilet paper packed to the rafters, I'd imagine in Indonesia it's instant noodles.

In south Bali we've noticed that brown onions which come from China are scarce & expensive (about 200,000 / kg) ....... the smaller red local onions will do us just fine @ 35-40,000 / kg

It is in part related to the outbreak albeit the beginning of the increase (January) was only related to late issuance of importing licenses.
The very vast majority of onions sold on the Indonesian market were imported from China which is the world top producer of this commodity. If the first increase is due to the late issuance of the proper documentations, to only an handful of importers, it became terrible when all importation from China got jammed due to the outbreak.
In January the prices for wholesale increased from Rp 15K to Rp 40K, then with jamming it went from 40K to over 100K. At the moment a sack of 20 kg, when bought by bulk is between 2 to 3 jt depending on quality and size . At the retail level we are talking about around 200K a kg which bare most provinces but Bali or JKT to get any. There's no market for onions at Rp 200K per kg outside these high paying provinces.
The situation may be eased next month since the Trade Minister has issued a regulation to temporarily remove the need to get import documentation for importers of bawang bombay and bawang putih till May 31st. It should allow a greater stock with much more import than in the past three months and ultimately help stabilize the price before Ramadhan.

The late issuance or non issuance of import license in the past three months has been a problem for many commodities traditionally imported (ex: oranges and grape for example, which have been affected too).

Absolutely true, but the devil is in the details.

Trade Ministry allowed free import without import licences for onion and garlic loaded to ships till 31 March. Onion and garlic from India are ready to come here in large quantities.

However, the Agriculture Ministry said import not possible without their Rekomendasi (to get one need a long list of useless documents). And they are right because the law requires Rekomendasi from them, but this can be overridden by a Presidential regulation too.

Also, Customs will not allow (experience from the importer) the import of goods without Rekomendasi or waiver of Rekomendasi form Agriculture ministry, and discharging is not guaranteed.

So basically all imports of non-Chinese onion and garlic are not allowed. The cartel controls the market and will not allow any newcomers for the market of 270 million people.

When the situation became unbearable with onion and garlic prices, news came yesterday that in Surabaya already came by ship first shipments of the Chinese garlic and onion, so everything will be OK.

Common sense!

Yeh the onions has been months due to Chinese import
Oranges also
Pork since also Bali had some issues
Spanish cheeses and wines

Lot of this is due to the European tax / tariffs and or Chinese imports but that's what the f&b people here tell me they are short of mostly and of course have to rejig menus and ingredients in popular dishes

I originally thought the onion shortage was because everyone was doing that scratchy pijat thing with the coin and onion so they didn't get corona!

Strangely...I noticed Dettol antibacterial body wash could not be found in two different large grocery stores. Still available online but going quick.

Are Walla Walla sweet onions from the USA available to buy inIndonesia? I got spoilled eating them instead of the typical generic onions that make you cry. What's so great about Walla Walla sweet onions.
Good luck! :D Even in Oregon/Washington they're really only available when in season. When they are, that's the only kind I buy. :D You must be from the West, anywhere East of the Rockies usually people refer to Vidalia.

I lived in the Seattle area before retiring to Asia. Every summer my garder had a section for Walla Walla onions. They are easy to grow and typically took 2 years to mature. They are great for salads or anything! I was hoping I cound get some starter onions to grow here.

70% alcohol for disinfection is hard to get here, it used to be 5000 a bottle, now its around 39000 if you can find it. Bleach is also nearly impossible to find.

Sugar, yellow onions are limited and 99 ribu/kilo. Hand sanitizer is very scarce. Found some in Lotte Grocer at 500ml for 195ribu. I don't need any since it is always something we kept on hand. Wife bought loads of caster sugar a few months ago on sale for 50% off so we can use that to replace granular sugar. I mostly use Equil so not too concerned about sugar. Heard some warungs have kilo sugar for 18ribu/kilo. Not too bad.

I noticed Masako & cans of tuna were sold out in the local supermarket... damn, I thought I was the only one stocking up on tuna - seems my secret tasty recipe is out now ;)

Cannot find any dentist in private practice open for business now in Jakarta.

Quite a lot of imported stuff running out at Hardy's (ex) Sanur.
But I think it may well have to do with saving cash by no re ordering.
Cashflow in must be horribly low, and I could understand they are reducing orders.
