Aceh's Governor Arrested by KPK?

Well, it's a never ending story. After focusing on Jakarta and Java, more and more KPK actions have shown that practically all Regents and Governors have dirty hands. (More recent) examples are Rita Widyasari from Kutai Kartanegara, Ratu Atu from Banten and Syahri Mulyo from Tulungagung (who still got a majority of votes btw, even if he was already in jail for three weeks?!). And northern Sumatra is also one big mess.

And when the calls went out for him to be caned - he proudly announced that under Islamic sharia there is no caning for corruption - cunt.

I would really love to see him being canned, make a change from the poor women and men who are flogged for trivia

The current (and previous) governor were of course GAM militants. And I can imagine many there will pereceive it as a retaliation from the Indonesian government (i.e. Jakarta).

Most Acehnese I know are very suspicious of this arrest and do not believe he will receive a fair trial from Indonesia. However, most of those same people also have an extreme contempt for corruption and are mostly adopting a "wait and see" approach to this. There has been a significant uptick in calls for Acehnese independence, restoration of GAM etc., of course.

My real concern is that it will cause a return of the kind of election violence we've seen previously in Aceh between the various GAM splinter factions that took control of Aceh following the peace deal. Most of the suspicion or support runs along those party lines and I fully expect that Partai Aceh will seize this as an opportunity to assert itself as the "true" successor to GAM.

My other prediction is that in addition to running on a heavy anti-corruption platform, the next elected governor will seek stiffer penalties under Qanun Aceh. Remember that Irwandi Yusuf is a very moderate voice and largely not a fan of shari'a compliant penalties. I believe he was the governor who previously vetoed measures to introduce stoning. This will be interpreted by some in the Acehnese public as evidence that his "soft" ways should be replaced by divinely guided laws like stoning and amputation.

There are reports that Irwandi Yusuf, Aceh's governor, has been taken in for questioning by KPK (Corruption Eradication Commission). I am not 100% certain that he has been arrested. I certainly hope not.

If this is true, I suspect there will be a great deal of unrest in Aceh.

Most of the Indonesian press articles say that he has been arrested (ditangkap), and is a suspect (tersangka). The arrest was made in a KPK sting operation (operasi tangkap tangan), where the governor was caught taking Rp 500 million as a bribe.

The Aceh branch of FPI has stated they support amputation as a punishment if theft is proven. No idea of the internal Aceh politics on this.

And now Western media is finally catching up to the arrest... only to report about the predictable effects of an Aceh without Irwandi Yusuf. He had only three months ago agreed to perform caning in prisons instead of in public. With him out of the picture, it didn't take long for a return to public caning.

My prediction is that if Irwandi Yusuf does indeed go to jail then Aceh's next elected governor, likely to be Muzakir Manaf, will run with greater implementation of the shari'a. It will be seen as the answer to corruption and "loose morals."

I wonder if there were any masochists among the floggies.

Does indonesian laws allow for Aceh to impose amputation and death by stoning and other measures?

The amazing thing is that the Indonesian government was more concerned about Aceh’s flag (which was too similar to GAM) than its laws.
