Another escape !

A United States citizen has become the latest inmate to escape from Kerobokan prison in Bali.

American man Christian Beasley, 32, climbed a back wall of the jail at dawn on Monday.

It would appear no lessons have been learnt or no proper risk management plan was implemented from previous escapes.

However, an assessment of escape probability in the recent prison inmates that escaped probably would show low risk. Due to the low level of crimes they were sentenced for.

Nonetheless, someone will have some answering to do.

Not surprisingly the second one failed and got caught.

For the record, CB, the guy who made it (at least for now) was on trial at the moment. He "could" have been sentenced with a sentence of a year or even less IF he would have been recognized as a consumer only. He got caught with about 5 grams of hashish he received by postal mail from Kanada.
The second inmate, PAH, was caught in February and sentenced to "only" 20 months. With ten months done already it means that he would have had less than a year left to do.

I remember reading about him in the news and in this forum.

Not sure how he got caught, on a separate note I think if you are going to escape from prison you need a basic level of fitness and a support team waiting outside. Makes for some interesting thoughts on how one would escape from a prison then the country.

Yeah, this guy! A total nutcase with no brain. He's got a wife and a kid here and rather than thinking of the consequences it may have on them and do the remaining 10 months quietly he tried his luck. What he's perhaps not put in the equation is that now there is high possibility that rather than finishing his time in the Kerobokan holliday camp, he is sent to Nusakambangan, where the Bulgarian and Indian guys who got arrested after their escape last July have been sent.

Indeed. It is not surprising that out of the 4 who escaped in July, the two who remain at large are the Malaysian and the one who had been living in Bali for some time, while the two who have been caught were "fresh off the boat" so to speak.

In the present case, there is good chance that CB has contacts in Bali. You don't use postal mail to receive dope in a PO box when you are a tourist. Time will tell how well prepared he was and how well connected he may be.

But wouldn’t the only “consequence” be just that? Being sent to Nusakembangan? If not mistaken I read somewhere that there are no additional penalties for escaping prison if caught again?

Pretty sure they’ll make your life as miserable as they possible can for your remaining time, but at least it won’t add another couple of years to your sentence..

Escaping from jail wouldn't add to their sentence per se because, as you rightly have read, it is not an offense listed in the KUHP. I guess that it is so easy to bribe a "permission" that the DPR didn't imagine that one would try to get into the headache of escaping. It's about time to add a pasal or two in the draft of the new KUHP our kind DPRs promise to the Nation for now... 20 years or so.

However while escaping, these gentlemen may have committed a bunch of offenses for which they may be asked to be accountable for.
As an example, I've read that in order to escape our two Kerobokaners have allegedly cut a fence which is a public property. Intentionally destroying a property is an offense punishable by a maximum of seven years in jail.
During the last June escape, I've read that one of the escapee has been caught with an obviously false passport. This is a crime which may be rewarded with a maximum of 5 years in jail.
As you perhaps know, the Australian escapee who is still at large is maintaining a FB account where he often mocks the Police and Indonesia. Expressing feelings of hostility, contempt or hatred toward the Indonesian Government or its Institutions may be rewarded by a maximum of 7 years in jail.

I imagine that Indonesia has little to gain in prosecuting them for any of the above offense but I suppose you get my drift.

Please note that, as per the law, the time spent on an escape is not counted as time done.

Now the 57 year old American who thought robbing stores with a knife could be a viable option for his wife and baby ( and got a relatively lenient sentence) figures trying to escape would probably be another good option. What can you say really.

Unlike what the article says, he has been captured on Friday evening in Senggigi, Lombok, NTB. The "Saturday" comes from a translation mistake. Police indeed stated on Saturday that they caught him but SatResKrim Badung head said "sudah ditangkap kemarin malam di Lombok".

Also it was the third, and not second, escape of foreign inmate from Kerobokan for this year. The first one was a solo escape but since the inmate was neither an Australian nor an American or any citizenship that would help make it a thrilling story, there was almost no international press coverage.

The first escape attempt this year was made by a Peruvian who got caught in Pekanbaru on his way to Malaysia, after having transited in Jakarta and Batam without being detected, even in airports! He was travelling with only a scanned copy of a Chilean passport.

We will never know what was Beasley's plan, if any, unless he writes a book but considering that he headed the first day of his escape to Lombok, we may deduce that he was on his way to Timor Leste.

All those who have been caught from the two first escape attempt have been transferred to Nusa Kembangan in the weeks after.

which reassuringly means it's more likely to at least be a true story rather than they all print verbatim the same version like a rolled out press release like they do if its some corrupt politician being too ill to look up in court etc etc etc

Not sure I would. Considering that in just 6 months we already had 3 succesful attempt, by the time he finishes and prints his book it may well have become so yesterday to escape from Kerobokan.

Maybe a simple "How To" pamphlet or a Youtube video would sell better than a True Crime tell all.

I read he was only under detention and awaiting trial for a drug offence...so I guess he'll still need to be tried in Bali.
Maybe he'll be found not guilty......

edit: Today's JP now says he was found guilty but awaiting sentence....for 5 grams of hash....we'll see.
I heard kilos of hash are sent to the Kerobokan Hilton every morning.
