... and let's continue with another "off-topic": are new watches significantly cheaper in Singapore than in Indonesia? Going to S-pore for a few days and a couple of Seiko prod. numbers already in my mind...

In my experience very few items are actually cheaper in Singapore considering the very high rents and salaries, however choice/availability might be better.

For second hand watches drop by Far East Plaza on Scotts Road, next to the Grand Hyatt. On the first floor there are a few dealers with some very nice watches available.

Doing a Singapore trip myself as well weekend after next, mostly to stock up on groceries I can't get here

Slightly off topic but Dubai is the absolute king for watches / second hand watches etc

The gold souk in Deira has countless real genuine stores selling real genuine watches and even things like Rolex Daytona Chronos which in UK stores have a 2year waitlist but in Dubai they have lots of them, even can change the dial, bracelet, have platinum, white gold etc etc all legit

Years ago personally I had a share in a shop there, was incredible the stock we got, especially from Jockeys who were paid a paltry basic salary of about $2000 a month but then got win bonuses and such but also always getting gifts from Sheikhs, some guys used to come in a few times a year with handfuls of $5-10,000 watches to sell, all engraved on the back or with the stable name on the dial
I was always a fan of bigger chunky watches, started years ago with a Tag, went to a Breitling Hercules, then onto Franck Muller and now AP
Had 2 Cartier, a Santos 100 limited edition, and a Roadster Chrono and some other things in my collection.
Anyway if you are travelling, and serious collector, a trip to Dubai is a must if you want a certain brand or edition of watch

I can even DM you the name and number of the trustworthy people to approach there

We have a vintage Omega Seamaster watch- automatic (no winding/ no battery)
Bet hubby would sell it for the right price- in need of cleaning & new strap but last we checked it worked fine- (now in back of a drawer somewhere )

If I recall correctly its circa 1950s Edit: 1952
I tried to find one similar online & have seen some but never found one just the same- has provenance in so much as it was given to me by a rather wealthy family friend back in the 80s.

One of the few things I brought over to Indonesia with me.

Seems we have a few watch afficionados here so I have a question please....
When I became aircrew in the RAF in the '60's they issued me with a Hamilton chronometer. I was expecting a Rolex, as the ex wartime aircrew chaps had, but I believed the Hamilton was superior because that's what they told me.....but I was young and naive.
When I retired they took my trusty Hamilton back! The Queen is not very generous to her retired servicemen....unlike other employers who usually gift a watch to retirees....
My question therefore, as I've never since heard of a Hamilton, is it a well known watch?
I recall it was accurate but very heavy.

If I recall correctly Hamilton was the last USA watch manufacturer until the late 60's. The quality was comparable to the best that the Swiss could make up to that time. However, right after the war manufacturing cost was much lower in Europe than in America, so all US watch brands were eventually manufactured in Switzerland, or even sold outright to the Swiss. Today there is no US-made watch anymore, except for Shinola in Detroit. I hesitate to call that fully made in America because the movement is swiss made.

I just got into mechanical watches, so I've been reading a lot about it. Still no plan to be a collector, I simply want a couple of decent automatics that don't break the bank. My first mechanical watch is a Maratac. It's made by a small US company specializing in government contracts. It is essentially a sterile (non branded), utterly simple, yet tough watch powered by a Miyota movement. Everything that I need and nothing that I don't.

For the dressier watch I bought a Victorinox Swiss Army Officer. It's a closeout model that I got for less than 1/3 of retail price. It comes with Sapphire crystal, luminous hands, Swiss ETA movement, display back, solid bracelet, rated at 100m, and all made in Switzerland. It's a tremendous value because it's cheaper than Seiko SARB.

I've been looking at vintage watches, but I'd rather not buy anything until I know more. There are many fakes for sale, as well as unscrupulous sellers who switch out original components with cheap ones. There are probably entire factories out there making fake Rolex watches of every level of forgery.

That's true, however once you've been around the scene for a while you'll learn how to spot them from a mile away, as they always seem to f-up the most obvious things. If they did somehow to manage to get the aesthetics right, the movement will always be the dead give-away.

More difficult, especially in the rarer watches / collectors scenes, are to spot "franken" watches, these are watches put together from original parts but combined from different watches.

Actually they sometimes make the errors very obvious on purpose, to weed out the experts who will likely make problems, that way only the stupid people will buy one and not complain

I hear the same mentality goes for the nigerian email scam, to the educated ones you can smell it a mile away, but we are not their target, so their first attack is so obviously a scam that they can then filter out all the stupid people who are more likely to believe in it all

I know it's not second hand, but for new ones I found these guys to be pretty up front with the stock and the pricing. Are they legit? How do I know? There are other websites as well, how would I know? I'm looking for an automatic casual watch that's on the smaller side and fairly thin (preferably <40mm and <11mm thick). Not a fan of large watches or divers or sports. Orient Bambino is nice, some of the Seiko 5s are nice too.

Any suggestions?

I'm not a fan of large watches either, as I have small wrists. Here's what I found so far in the 36mm - 41mm range:
- Seiko SARB series
- Seiko Presage series
- Orient Sentinel
- Orient Howard
- Marathon
- Victorinox Swiss Army Officer
- Victorinox Swiss Army Infantry
- Maratac Mid series

Orient Sentinel and Howard have the exact same movement as the latest generation Bambino, but they have a modern look. Pricing is about the same with Bambinos.

The rest on the list are a fair bit more expensive, but they are still worth the street price.

I got my Omega Seamaster Automatic in 1980, bought it with the extra months salary the Saudi king gave us on his coronation, the watch is still going well sadly he isnt

Well, Rolexes are not a problem for me, because they don't appeal to me. They are a bit too chunky for my taste. Besides, it seems like everybody and his brother have one, and only watch afficionados can tell the difference between the genuine articles and fakes. It's kinda like speaking English among Indonesians, few can distinguish between poor and fluent English.

I know a real Rolex is high quality, but at the moment the only Rolex I would consider wearing is my dad's, when he passes it on to me.
