Bali Traffic Police Corruption

Ok, so I got some information from here (Indonesian).

Basically, for certain types of basic traffic offenses, you can simply request a blue slip, which is the equivalent of admitting your mistake and that you are willing to pay the fine:

  • The police officer will write you a "blue ticket" (Lembar Tilang Biru) and will take your SIM or your STNK.
  • You then head to the nearest BRI, show your blue ticket and pay the fine. You then get a receipt.
  • You take this receipt to the designated Police station to get your documents back.

If you are willing to argue your case to courts, then you will be given a "red ticket", which is going to be PITA with no guaranteed outcome except hours upon hours in the "system".

I know it's very naughty, but my police general friend gave me one of his hats with gold braid on, we put it on the Dash, it give me to some immunity, and I just get waved on when the hat is seen

Similarly, only in Lombok, I have the number of a police officer friend who I call to speak with the officer who has pulled me over. Another method of course is to just get that little scooter up to speed as fast as you can, throw your head back laughing, and speed through the waiting entourage of police. Not to be advised as the following may occur.

You just gave me an idea for an article on expatindo.org! A little explainer on the red slip and the blue slip will be perfect!

Sounds like a good and helpful article! If you can find the official ticket amounts that would be great, Vanhelsing said 40rb and you seemed to agree that is a typical amount, but a google search leads me to believe most offenses are 250rb-1jt.

Also interesting that they will take your SIM or STNK... which means you're driving illegally to the ATM and later to the station to pick up your documents. Wouldn't that be fun to get ticketed a second time on the way to the ATM.

There is supposed to be a table with the various fine amounts on the back of the blue slip and according to hukumonline, the amounts vary from region to region.

Moreover, if you're given a blue slip, it automatically means that the SIM or STNK has been taken and so if you're arrested again, I suppose you can show it or the BRI receipt.

I remember the conversation from a few years ago. Much of the comments were that people were breaking the law for minor infractions and would rather pay the cop than the fine.

But according to the Elizabeth Pisani, this corruption is good, as long as they redistribute some of it to the community.

She's an idiot because it normalizes corruption. Wonder why Ahmed Dhoni's 13 year old so got off killing 12 innocent people... used to paying a small fine.
