If someone decides to not renew the sponsored retirement visa, is there any payment demanded, and if so, how much is it?

Assuming you refer to a Retirement KITAS or KITAP , yes there is , unless you want to leave Indonesia and never return again .

Unfortunately Indonesian Immigration requires foreigners with (any type of) KITAS or KITAP to request an Exit Only Permit/EPO (which was also named "Return of Immigration Documents", referring to the KITAS/KITAP/Re-Entry Permit) , in order to 'appropriately' cancel the residence permit .

The official fee for the EPO is now Rp100'000 , but your agent will charge more , of course (how much will depend on each agent) .

The Regulation does not state any penalty for not getting the EPO , but in practice if you don't get it and request a new Indonesian Visa , Immigration may not issue it (I heard of 1 such case more than 1 year ago) until you get the EPO or its equivalent (ERP Tidak Kembali , if you already left Indonesia) .

Thanks for that, Marcus!

I'd heard of that EPO in connection with other types of visa, but wasn't sure if it applied to the Retirement Kitas.

My agent quoted 2 juta! I don't suppose we can just pop into the nearest immigration office and pay 100k directly, eh?

Just checking my options. I'll always want to come back to Indonesia at least several times a year, but my agent has been raising the price the last couple extensions so that I'm starting to feel like a cash cow. It irritates me that most of the money goes to these middle men.

Considering the very easy and extendable one year visa in Cambodia as my base, with a couple 2 month visits a year here...

Unfortunately you cannot .

There are many visas that do not require sponsor , so you don't need a visa agent . And with the online system you don't need to go to the Indonesian Embassy/Consulate .

If you want suggestions , just tell us how many days you stay at each time you come to Indonesia .

The last I heard, the online unsponsored 2 month visa turned out to be non extendable, right? That would probably be what I'd go to if I don't extend the Retirement visa.

I'd go for the Silver Hair visa if I trusted the system...

If you refer to the single entry 60 days C1 Tourist Visa/Visit Stay Permit , it is extendable (see below) .

What do you mean by "trusted the system" and/or are you afraid of something ?

-------------------

As you will come to Indonesia many times per year , your best option may be a (1 , 2 , or 5 years) multi-entry Tourist Visa , 60 days each entry (may be extended - need to confirm with Immigration) .

Other option : 30 days (extendable for 30 days more) Visa-on-Arrival/VOA , cost Rp500k .

Maybe my info is out of date. I remember when they announced the online 60 day tourist visa it was indeed to be extendable. But when it finally appeared, it said on the website: not extendable.

An extendable one needed a company sponsor, wasn't cheap, and the sponsor demanded further payments for each extension. A friend got one of these a couple years ago, and his half year stay cost around half of a retirement visa.

Has this changed? That would be great news!

On the multiple entry ones, it used to be they were difficult to actually get, and required some reason other than tourism. I've never talked to anyone who actually got one. Has this changed?

As for not trusting the system... Yes I do wonder if 50k USD would be safe in a bank here. Several reasons: many stories of money pilfered from Indonesian banks, with no help from bank or government authorities, decades long rumors of the government desiring to tax foreign residents on worldwide income... to name a few.

I appreciate your help, Marcus. You're the visa expert!

I don't know about changes , but what I showed you is what is now in the official evisa website , except that from "Extendable" I changed to "Extendable up to 180 days" .

Again I don't know if it changed , but I suggest you (in one of your visit to Indonesia) to ask any city's Kantor Imigrasi about what would be acceptable - ask for a sample/contoh (for example , a statement from an Indonesian friend or similar) . Or through email : Direktorat Izin Tinggal Keimigrasian : [email protected] , [email protected] (from https://www.imigrasi.go.id/hubungi)

It is about Government banks (Bank : Mandiri , BNI , BRI , ...) , I would not worry .

Anyway , I would choose other simpler visa .
