Excellent long-form article in coconuts. (ht reddit: )
https://coconuts.co/jakarta/feature...lamic-defenders-front-playboy-poetic-justice/
Rizieq Shihab, firebrand cleric, founder of Indonesia’ infamous Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) and crusader against pluralism and pornography, has officially been named a suspect by the Jakarta Police in a high-profile pornography case that is currently dominating headlines in Indonesia.

While many have cheered the police’s decision to go after Rizieq, who has used his position as the head of the hardliner organization to spread intolerance, violently attack numerous minority groups and unjustly imprison former Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok Tjahaja Purnama, some progressives and human rights activists are hesitant to do so.

The article contains a lot more text, but is an enlightening read.

Read that today, it was interesting as a lot of those Playboy and Ariel cases were before my time in Indonesia. While I've vaguely heard of them, that article really seals the deal in my books.

Oh really? Gosh. They didnt seem that long ago....

Look at a movie on Trans TV (normally two every evening); everything that smells a bit of naked body parts, cleavage, boobs, @ss, is blurred out.

So are cigarettes when somebody smokes and scenes with blood are in B&W. They applied major censorships and cuts in the movies of kissing scenes etc.

Good thing there are so many cigarette ads since the movies would only last one hour otherwise....

You even watch that channel ?

Back then , that channel exploited scandals and created fabricated gossip to keep business running and even ruin relationships for some people. After Wishnutama left, there's nothin left there

All Free-to-Air channels in Infonesia are POS, Even if some (Trans) are worse than others (Berita Satu, Metro), in general all offer only low quality shows, gossip programs, sinetrons and questionable news, with shameless rummaging from YouTube.

Those TV channels can play huge roles during elections and public unrest though; it is the only way many people inform themselves. Also, they are part of multi billion dollar enterprises that in this particular case, even own Transmart Carrefour, Bank Mega, Coffee Bean, Uber, etc. You can imagine the power they have.

But the specific point here is the hypocrisy; just like a Rizieq, for the outside world everything looks holier than holy, we have black spots on our forehead from praying (very trendy) and are good Muslims. But behind the scenes...

Now this is what they really like over here. Reporting on a young lady - probably with some mental issues- who has been spotted walking around half naked. (And who was arrested.)

Her full name, age, family situation, etc. is completely published.

And some even are capable to mention it is a provocation of a Chinese Christian (because of the cross tattoo) during Ramadan...

I haven't seen it for a long time, but you would occasionally see naked men and women walking about, they looked totally black hair disheveled and uncut, obvisously not quite right, but totally ignored as the ambled along

I have seen people (only men) doing this a couple times - once in Puncak and once in Anyer. I mentioned this to a coworker, and he said something to the effect of, "Ohh, itu cuman orang gila..." with a shrug.

I've only seen one women, she looked totally wild, I suppose in all the time I've been here 3men, we were going to Taman Mini and I spotted a naked man, I pointed it out to my wife, she said I'm not looked, his head isn't right

In Bandar Lampung, one of our local rags has a page dedicated each day to where people send in complains or questions and the various government departments answer them. Every couple of weeks there is a report of a naked, crazy man or woman in various areas. The answers by the police are either they checked and couldn't find anyone or they have been picked up and sent to a mental institute.

On the other hand, there are still a lot of kampungs here that have to get their water from wells by the bucket and it isn't that uncommon to drive through some of these areas and seeing people of all ages naked and bathing in front of their homes. Everyone acts like it is just natural and go about their business. I always understood that people would bath wrapped in a sarong but I guess that isn't the case everywhere. Another reason i like this area. Not because you may see some teen girl naked in her front yard but people don't seem as hung up on all this religious crap you hear about in some areas.

Even just outside Jakarta, people aren't so hung up on this.

When I went hiking in Sentul, we crossed a bridge over a river in the country side and there was a woman bathing in the river. She wasn't in a secluded area at all, it was near the village and other people were busy doing their own things nearby, completely able to see her but just not caring.

With surrounding lush hills, this looked like the best bath tub in the world.

And it's not just that. For instance, I live just outside Jakarta and there is a rule at the mall nearby that no restaurant can serve food before 12pm during Ramadan (conveniently, the mall owned food court is only one allowed to open. Maybe something to do with the fact that each stall in that food court operates on a revenue sharing plan rather than rental agreement. Just going out on a limb here.).

Meanwhile, at the local "Pasar Modern", it's business as usual. All the warungs are just as busy as usual, packed with people eating and nobody giving a shit. No curtain or anything.

There is no government rules here about the serving of food during daylight hours during Ramadan. I see some warungs that don't open until late but all the restaurants and malls food areas are fully open at their normal times. Some do put curtains up but when I walk behind one I feel that those are so the people inside that probably shouldn't be eating can't be seen. It's pretty much business as usual.
