We had an electrical outage a few weeks ago during the day, and it really made me think about what I would do for longer outages.

As someone who has very limited mobility, it’s not easy for me to just leave for a few hours to escape the daytime heat. Perhaps I’m just getting older, but Bandung does seem hotter than 10 years ago.

I‘ve always wanted a solar setup, but battery backup seems very expensive in Indonesia. We got a 1/2 pk AC installed earlier in the year, which helps me to sleep during the day. Before that, my 12 or so years living in Bandung, a fan was sufficient.

I had seen a lot of ads for Power Stations in the US. Basically a big power bank, but often with options for small portable solar panels for recharging. You can also plug into normal AC power to charge them up in an hour or two. For a 1000-2000kw version in the US, prices were $500-$1000.

The main problem that I saw, was there weren’t many 220/240V versions in Indonesia that were affordable. Plus, since we would really want to run the whole house, lights, water pump, fridges, AC, fans, and my Cpap machine, it’s possible it would only last an hour or two from a full charge.

I had my wife’s cousin who lives with us, and drives and run errands research the options. He suggested a 2000 watt gas generator, that looks very similar to a Honda, but locally manufactured. Price is about 5.5 jt.

A gas generator was really pretty far from what I was considering. Both the noise, cost of fuel, and exhaust were all concerns. However, from online videos, you can just plug the generator into one of your outlets to power the entire house.

Perhaps I’m overthinking the need, but having a good option if the electricity was off for days, seems prudent. Has anyone else chosen a reliable electricity option, for day and night?

Yesterday I saw a bunch of gensets displayed at ACE Hardware ...
In the news I read this ...

"The sale has increased with (genset), whereby usually 1 to 2 pieces are sold per month, but since the rollout, more than 10 have been sold," Dina said when contact was made with newspaper Tribun-Timur. Generators at Ace Hardware are sold at prices from IDR 3 million. The cheapest starts with IDR 3 million, but the most sold generator is IDR 14 million," he said. Some pdf's about portable gensets (run time 5 - 12 hours) ... can be downloaded here at Aksa Power Gen:

Or check out this site: https://www.indotara.co.id/product/347/jual-genset-open

More info on a 2000 Watt genset: https://www.bluedm.com.au/blog/what-can-a-2000-watt-inverter-generator-run/

A 2000 watt generator can provide a power supply for a range of applications around your home, in addition to providing emergency power during an outage. As such, inverters of this size are commonly used as home generators.

While these generators are popular due to their long run time, affordable price and simple maintenance, the most important initial considerations are those associated with power capabilities.

The below table outlines common items around the house a 2000 Watt inverter generator can power:

Item Estimated Watts
Microwave (1000 watts): 1000-2000
Coffee Maker: 600-1200
Toaster: 800-1500
Fridge: 500-750 (must check starting watts, as they can be 3 times this)
Chest Freezer: 600
Laptop Computer: 20-75
Speakers: 200
TV (e.g. 50” LED): 240

This is the smaller type that I’m considering. Seems to have good reviews. Not a huge monster.
Tokopedia gas generator
Hi Jaime, It could be low cost solution, How effective? depend on your situation. The technical specification of the product you mentioned is not very detail. The website is not accessible. Certainly made in China - does not mean bad, I just have no idea the reliability and performance of this product, no info on sound level, fuel cap and consumption. I guess you have to refuel every 3-4 hours at rated capacity. Ask the noise level, wish not exceed than 60db at rated power, lower is better.
We do considering few silent inverter generator for bac-up power for our under construction hut; bigger capacity though - so silent diesel inverter generator from Honda was my preference; before I ditched and decide to use 6000WP PV panel with 50 KWH LifePO4 battery.

They have a number of videos showing it in use. As far as I can tell it is an Indonesian product using Japanese technology. Pretty certain it’s not 60db or less.

I’d love to have a really big solar panel system, with the LifePO4 batteries, but I’d be afraid of how expensive it is.

Youtube generator running

Youtube is indeed could be useful; but I'm used and prefer to read the manufacturer product specification and OIM manual.
I tried to access the website www.excellcorp.jp (giving the impression it's made in Japan) but no success. Google shown excel corporation website, but this generator is not listed among their product.
I love and proud if it is made in Indonesia; but I doubt can compete with Chinese products.
Sometime ago I was looking for hand tractor and eyeing a product which brand is very Indonesian; they also have very wide range product including similar genset, I thought it's made in Indonesia. They participated in the agricultural exhibition in Bali, so I took this opportunity to see their product and realized there's similar product, with different color and different brand. I asked, and they admit most of part - and some products are CBU - are imported from China.
I also just bought smart home product - the brand and their website give the impression of made in Indonesia. Once I receive the product, it's made in China; the product is not bad at all. I bought similar device, different brand, and actually the same product.
