We would like to help a young Balinese man with paraplegia obtain a special device, only made and sold in the United States, that would allow him to play video games.
Could anyone please tell us if you have experience importing something from the United States or buying something from there and sent it to Indonesia, if there are any taxes to pay? If so, where could we find out how much? Thank you.
This is the device

Why games why not educational software for Maths or English, they do plenty which can be fun to learn, at least turn him into Stephen Hawking, so he can maybe get a good job

Always be wary of reshippers dropshippers maybe they will steal the money or the goods, also the taxes on imports into Indonesia even through these agents etc

Expect at least 35% in import taxes. Maybe more. I only imported twice here because of the high import taxes plus they don't go by any invoice you provide, they look the item up on the Internet so even if you got a great buy, you get to pay taxes on the highest price they can find. On top of that, once the price is set, there is no changing it with all the evidence in the world.

the seller adviced us about to use this as well, any experience?

It's been many years since I have used this service, but I did and it went fine. It's a good service for when a US company does not have any international shipping option and only sells locally.

You will have to pay the following on the value of the goods + shipping:

7.5% import duty
11% PPN (VAT)
up to 20% PPh 22 (income tax). If you have a NPWP it's 10%, if you don't, it will be 20%.

If it's shipped via DHL, Fedex and the like, they will contact you by email at the time of custom clearance with a link to pay for duties as above + their handling fee. Make sure you ask for the breakdown and give them your NPWP if required.

Alternatively, you could also try finding a jasa titip (jastip) service on FB or IG, where someone travelling back from the US could bring it to you. Then it's a bit of a coin toss whether they get checked by customs at the airport and have to pay import duty.

That's the type of email you would receive.

Alternatively, if you find the item or similar on Amazon and it ships to Indonesia, then Amazon calculates import duties and you pre-pay at the time of ordering. If the import duty ends up being less than what you pre-paid, Amazon refunds directly to your payment method automatically. This is by far the easiest option if available.

And lastly, the only real risk I see is if the Indonesian customs declares the item a medical device. Then it could be blocked altogether and need arguing to get it released as medical devices require a special license.

Didn't even think about that part.
