Online shopping

Recently I was searching around in Cikarang for external hard drives enclosures. I have two "naked" HDD that need some casing so I can use them plus one of my enclosure got broken (loose micro USB socket). So I was looking for 3 of them. I went to maybe 4-5 stores but the cheapest quote was 120 000 - 240 000 for one enclosure. I was a bit surprised with the price since I got several enclosures in UK for around £3 each 5 years ago.

I decided to search online just to confirm the price and I found the same closure for 40 000 rp. each. I never did any online shopping in Indonesia more precisely to buy things online. I do sell but never buy. I gave it a try and ordered several enclosures. Yesterday I received them. Exactly the same as in the shop on the road. Tested ... all working.

Why do I wrote all of my experience..... I just though since there were threads of "bule pricing rip off" and " no price lists" I though why not give a chance for a proper online shopping.

The advantages are:
- no traffic jam to get stuck in and waste time and parking fees
- no "sudden" price hike when the seller sees bule face and double the price in an instant
- price is given up front together with cost of delivery
- no need to negotiate price (some of us dislike it so much)

I know there are some disadvantages as well.

I have been pleasantly surprised when I bought a couple of items. It seems to be improving and I would do it again as well.

For my electronics needs, I rarely do any shopping in stores anymore.

For computer stuff:
www.nanokomputer.com
www.enterkomputer.com

and at the very last if you can't find it at the top 2: www.viraindo.com

If you can't find the item you want at those stores, you can try searching on tokopedia.com.

If it's not in any of those stores, chances are it's not available in Indonesia, period.

For the rest:

www.tokopedia.com

I'm not a big fan of Lazada, even though they've improved.

Never again am I shopping at bhinneka:

I built a computer last week and ordered all the parts from nanokomputer except for the casing because they didn't have the one I wanted and neither did the other shops.

The next day I received my order from nanokomputer.

In the mean time, bhinneka took 5 days just to tell me they were out of stock and that's after I called on day 2 when I saw that my order status was still "on process".

Thanks EL_G I will try those stores. For my shopping I used tokopedia and they have automatic cancellation (2 days) if the order is not accepted.

To both Smallworld, El_Goretto and others:

How about return policies? Damaged in shipment? Just turned out to be not what you thought it was??

Ok, for nanokomputer and enterkomputer, you know, the simple online shops, it's a bit old school. If there is a defect with the goods, the standard warranty applies. For shipping damage, you can add insurance when goods are sent over JNE or TIKI.

For tokopedia, the process is a bit like ebay: you pay tokopedia, the seller gets notified that the buyer has paid to tokopedia, the seller sends the goods, once the goods are received and in order, the buyer confirms reception and the tokopedia pays the seller.

If there is a problem, it can resolved amicably between the buyer and seller. If it cannot be solved amicably, then Tokopedia will intervene.

I've had a problem once which was solved by the seller and all was good. I gave him a good review so did he.

I have used Matahari Mall. I just need to get greater confidence in the Indonesian internet retailing and shipping.

I've had good luck with Enterkomputer in both sales, after sale help and warranty issue.
My wife uses Zalora from time to time without trouble.

Was looking for a new laptop battery and gaming laptops and with these prices those sites are definitely not interesting. For the first I will use AliExpress, for the second one more try in M2 and otherwise HK or EU with VAT discount.

For overall experience, BukaLapak is the overwhelming winner for me. I am usually able to find what I'm looking for at a better, or at least equal, price to what I'd find in a traditional shop. Shopping from a local seller affords me the option of delivery via GoJek—for many things at least. In the case of a dispute, defective item, wrong size or whatever, you can easily open a complaint and your money will not be forwarded to the seller until a resolution has been reached. I've used the dispute feature a few times and it worked wonderfully in the end. The user interface has improved dramatically as well since I've been using BL. Two thumbs up really.

Yes, Indonesia is not the cheapest. But for brand new goods, you also need to take into account the hassle of traveling overseas, the lack of local warranty, re-sale value, etc.

As to AliExpress, yes, they are cheap but you also have to wait at least a month to receive your goods.

Yes Bukalapak is similar to Tokopedia but I feel Tokopedia has more choice.

I think EL_G answered you your questions. I have personally so far not experienced any damaged / non working product (*knocking on the table*). Once your order is done you will be asked by tokopedia:

Did you receive your order no/yes/ complain? My guess is the complain is to be filled out once you find any fault with the product.

So far I have ordered small value items just to test out things how it works ect...

So far I've enjoyed tokopedia. I've bought a bunch of things there. So far thankfully all went well. I guess the most important thing is to shop with reputable merchant and to asses their responsiveness to your messages beforehand. I've also used Bhinneka a few times and so far I have good experience with them. Some of the items they have on sale are really great deal.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents to this thread. I've also found tokopedia.com to very good. They main point being is that they handle the money so you're in no danger of losing out if the vendor simply doesn't send the item.

The thing that's impressed me the most though is the ability to pay for bills and pulsa. I simply add money to my tokopedia account at my local Indomaret, then I can pay the bills and buy pulsa 24/7 without leaving the house. Here's what you can pay for/buy at the moment:

Pulsa HP - All the major phone operators pre-paid credit AND post-paid plans. Data packets too.
Listrik
PDAM
BPJS
Loan Repayments for various financing companies.
Online gaming vouchers.
Satellite TV - But only BigTV at the moment. It'd be great if they had Indovision, but since Indovision are a pack of incompetent dickheads I won't hold my breath.

My bank strangely doesn't offer credit cards and I never got around to signing up with a different bank. Because of tokopedia.com, I now don't really have any need for one.

Here's the link: https://pulsa.tokopedia.com

EDIT: I just realised this sounds a bit like a spam ad. Just to clear, it's not, I'm not getting anything out of it. It's just a handy service I thought I'd share with the forum.

Ganesha (the remover of obstacles, snack lover and good dancer) has answered my prayers. You can now pay Indovision via tokopedia.com.

See here: https://pulsa.tokopedia.com

Click 'Lainnya' then 'TV Kabel' then choose Indovision from the drop down list.

I'm thinking of making a purchase on Amazon. Anyone had experience since it became available in Indonesia? If there are customs charges, does Amazon take care of that or do you pay on arrival?
TIA

Yes it is. But after entering the complaint, they tell you to contact the seller directly (which in most cases you have done already without any results otherwise you would not complain) and they mention they will add a "help/escalate" button after three days.
