Hello. What are some things I should know before coming to Jakarta?

A lot of the things I bring are items or brands not available here, or exceeding expensive. Mostly food items, good tortillas, salsa, chocolates, beef jerky, cookies, candy, etc. I‘ll load up at Costco for 90% of the stuff. I’ve stopped bringing some heavier items, such as bottles of green...

How much do you pay for a good driver in Jakarta

Our driver/helper is my wifes cousin. On an average day, he drives an hour or two, mostly when my kid is in school. He does some household stuff, cleaning the AC filters, changing water bottles. He also goes to pick up food orders, grocery store, and uses my daughters US credit card, or mine...

How much do you pay for a good driver in Jakarta

Wages are quite variable. I know my Indonesian wife pays local Bandung pricing for most labor. Although our long time maid seems to get paid almost double what my wife's friend pays her. I try to encourage my wife to give periodic raises, to make sure that their income keeps up to rising costs...

    Starlink Internet

Not exactly true. As was pointed out on the forum recently, Apple Private Relay works great. It’s not exactly a VPN.

    Today's menu:

I’ve been on a pork belly binge the last 3-4 months. Had some decent pork belly at a local chinese restaurant, but it was fairly pricey. A full portion (advertised as 250gr) was 170k or so. One time a few months back, I got the container, and it was only 2/3 full, instead of full, like normal...

    Today's menu:

I remember doing something similar to hit a KFC in Kentucky when I drove all around the US in ‘87 or ‘88. That KFC had one or two AYCE eat nights at the restaurant. Never seen that at any KFC worldwide.

    Cold cuts in Malang

I think they may have changed the customs forms from 3-4 years ago. Maybe an e-form now? I don’t lie about the items I’m bringing in. All are commercially packaged, with any meats being cooked. Bacon bits, tortillas, See’s chocolates, Cheetos, Lindt’s, Toblerone, and a hundred other items. I’ve...

    Cold cuts in Malang

Well, I’m not talking about living in a hut in the middle of the jungle. There are lots of changes you can make to reduce expenses by 30-40%. I don’t mind eating meat or veggies from the pasar, or cheap satays from the motorcycle cart. I do quite enjoy certain foods from the US, and bring a...

His name is Bobby, not Charlie. :) If you can live more like Indonesians do, you can really reduce your expenses. Shop at the pasar instead of the fancy supermarket. Find a meat wholesaler and save 50% or more. We’ve done this in Bandung recently for pork items. I really like pork belly, but...

    Effect of Deportation

Was there not a daily fine for overstaying, or is that only up to 30 days? Working in another country would not keep you from getting a Kitas visa. You do need to be in country at least one day a year, as I recall. Deported twice, wow, quite an accomplishment! I’ve been to 60 countries, in...

    Cold cuts in Malang

Did you watch his video? Looks like a decent house. There is an AC unit in his bedroom. I’ve run into this before in Indonesia. If you’re in heavily tourist places, you’re not going to find the $600 a year houses. If you go further out, and deal with normal houses that Indonesians rent, not...

    Effect of Deportation

And what was your length of overstay? Is there a reason why if you were married to an Indonesian you didn’t have a Kitas or Kitap stay permit?

According to Youtube the video was just uploaded a month ago. Not sure if it was reposted from years ago.

    Moving household good to Jakarta

Personally, anything I couldn’t fit in my luggage, I’d probably sell, and just rebuy. Sometimes customs can be a very slow process, and waiting weeks or months might not be much fun.
