    Tourists ILFIL

Did you know that you can end sentences with a period ( . ) instead of an exclamation point? Sorry, couldn't resist!!! :D

    Wise (formerly TransferWise)

I finally jumped through the hoops for Wise and sent some money to my daughter in the US. The official rate via Wise was spot on with the rate by a Google search. Fees added about 0.7%; way way way cheaper than doing a wire transfer (not to mention infinitely more convenient once everything was...

    Weakening IDR

I am hoping for the USD to weaken a little before payday since I want to purchase some before I visit the US next month

New customs regulation, only 5kg of processed food allowed per person?

In the past, they used to mark bags with chalk. Of course, it was pretty easy to use wet wipes to erase said marks. Glad to hear that bringing a bunch of Costco stuff still does not trigger full searches.

New customs regulation, only 5kg of processed food allowed per person?

Just curious, does the water count as one of the two checked bag allowance, or is it treated differently?

New customs regulation, only 5kg of processed food allowed per person?

Maybe inbound flights from the kingdom get preferential treatment. Just curious, did you bring back ZamZam water? I have seen people bring back 19-litre jugs from when they did Umroh, and it seems like a rather heavy item to check in as baggage.

NPWP, pre/postnup, gift taxes and purchase of land

    1. I do not have any firsthand experience with prenups but would assume that the requirement is the same as for postnups. 2. I am not up on the latest property regulations, but as far as I know, getting a prenup that specifically separates assets is required for the Indonesian spouse to obtain...

NPWP, pre/postnup, gift taxes and purchase of land

I personally know three Foreign + Indonesian couples who have done this process. Specifically, the requirement to report one's assets every year means that the major assets will need to be on a separate tax form (hence, separate NPWP).

NPWP, pre/postnup, gift taxes and purchase of land

My experience is that a foreign spouse can initially have the same NPWP as the Indonesian spouse... BUT when they do a post-nup to separate assets ("pisa harta"), the Indonesian spouse will need to report income separately since any real estate will only belong to the Indonesian spouse. I am not...

    Election fraud

I used to hear that Suharto was the only candidate, and people would protest by "golput" aka golongan putih - leaving the ballot blank.

    Wise (formerly TransferWise)

I signed up with the Wise app last year and was disappointed to learn that I could only send money with it (ie: not receive). I suspect that this is related to the way that much of (outbound) international e-commerce is effectively impossible from here. If you move overseas, good luck ordering...

Looking for a good Indonesian girl.

Are you already in Indonesia? If you are Christian, you could try going to one of the English-speaking churches in the area. I do not know about other religions, but if you are Christian, church is a good place to look for women who have similar goals to yours.

IDR150,000 tourism levy for International Tourists coming to Bali starts today

For what it's worth, KITAS and KITAP holders (as well as a few other categories) are exempt from the tax.

The voting for Indonesia's General Election 2024 has started

Watching the USD / IDR exchange rate, I feel confident that the big money has spoken. Regardless of the results, Indonesia will avoid mass demos / chaos.

    The Heart Thing

Perhaps you could order refills using an online marketplace? Even when they require prescriptions, they might accept an older prescription form (and there is even an option for an online doctor's appointment to get an instant prescription).

Question for fellow teachers... re: not being allowed to eat lunch offsite

Thank you for the replies. I must admit that the onsite during non-teaching hours has always been a pet peeve, but the positive aspects of working at my current (and former) employer more than balance out the annoyance factor.

Question for fellow teachers... re: not being allowed to eat lunch offsite

I have had an overwhelmingly positive experience working at two "International Curriculum" schools in Jakarta, but there is one thing I have always found odd... At neither school are teachers allowed to leave the building/campus for lunch. Are these schools anomalies, or is this the case at most...

Get well soon! Thank you for sharing your experience. Interestingly, it sounds like BPJS may have better coverage than the private insurance my employer provides.

    Entertainment Tax to rise 40%-75%

I think people tend to paint all of Indonesia with the same brush, but different regions have different customs. For example, I have lived in the Jakarta area for 13 years and have never seen a meal in which only the men ate as described in the blog post above. My experience in the country is...
