I trained as a hypnotherapist. I used to work with people in the UK and I found it to be a wonderful tool to deal with anxiety and depression, bad habits and phobias.
Then I came to Indonesia where almost everyone seems to think a hypnotist is an evil magician who spirits kids away.

I have a hard time connecting the two versions.

What are your views?
Anyone encountered hypnosis/hypnotherapy and found it to be a dark art or (like me) found it to be a wonderful relaxing mini toolkit to re-jig the way we view things?

I tend to get one of three reactions when I talk about hypnotherapy-
1 ooh can you do me please.
2 scared face and keep away vibes
3 ooh can you teach me how to hypnotise people (usually men, thinking they can hypnotise women hehe)

In reality hypnosis is not some deep mysterious thing at all.
I would liken the hypnotic state to being absorbed in a task such as reading a really good book: the focus is on the task- yet we are aware of our surroundings and the normal sounds and distractions are like white noise.
However if something distinctive alerts us such as a phone ringing then we can switch our focus.
We are still aware of what we were reading when on the phone and still aware of the phone when reading.
Anyone ever driven their regular route and arrived at the destination but cannot recall segments of the journey, they have stopped at lights, been aware of road rules and driving correctly throughout the journey yet parts of it are a blank... this is akin to hypnosis - a splitting of the conscious if you like.

I find it a fascinating subject and practice, anyone else?

Bang goes my post on the subject :bounce:

When we went to Manga Dua to buy an Oven, we left our driver with the car, when we had found the oven, went back to the car, there was our driver, totally spaced out, no wallet, no idea what happened, but on my way back to him, a man touched me on the shoulder, I didn't know him and turned to look at him, he smiled and moved off quick, my wife said he had tried to hypnotise me, so perhaps the same person who had hypnotised our driver, I was always lead to believe that you couldn't make people do things they don't want to under hypnosis, but here it seems you can

Like being “in the zone†where sport or whatever is concerned but as far as being “controlled†& doing things that are basically against our own better judgement, I'm rather sceptical.

I remember the evil ex ma-in-law coming home one day claiming she'd been hypnotised whilst in a bemo &'d had her purse stolen.

It was the truth in a way but instead of being deliberately hypnotised by some would be thief as she claimed, the ol' bird (who was known to fall asleep in bemos) had been hypnotised by the white noise of traffic ( & pounding bass ) before being taken advantage of by an opportunistic thief.. …..lol

Like any mind games it depends on the level of belief.
You can't hypnotise someone who doesn't believe they can be hypnotised.

This is my experience as well. Every Indonesian I've met who claims to have been hypnotised, when pressed about the details, has really just been tricked. They're very quick to blame their own stupidity on being hypnotised.

It's a bit like masuk angin. How come it doesn't seem to happen in the west?

Indonesia Hypnosis Syndrome. When you won't admit you were stupid and let someone take advantage of you, so you blame it on hypnosis. Just another excuse of not taling responsibility for your own actions.

Now that would be interesting, doing hypnosis by email, the world would be yours

A fine idea Anglian. :)

In reality- I "do" hypnotherapy - emphasis on the therapy side of things.
The hypnosis helps to open up the route and then it facilitates the "treatment".
So a two way communication is vital.

Example
Someone is in the middle of several life crises at the same time- let's say a relationship breakdown, a death in the family and problems at work. They feel anxious, bereaved, stressed, depressed all these negative emotions running around - they feel like life is out of control and they are like a paper doll in a hurricane.

(many of us can probably identify with a similar period in life)

Hehe I guess I am like an emotion surgeon.
I find out from dialogue with them what is eating at them. (assessment)
I then relax them and we enter the hypnotic state. I then have them identify what needs to be dealt with and give them the "tools" to gather their emotions to manageable levels.
The point is that we cannot always change external factors but with hypnotherapy we can really do a good job on how we react to them.

I cannot do this by email or on a CD because there is not that interaction.
The sad thing is that hypnotherapy is a wonderful tool to help people but is not used as often as it could be due to people's irrational fears about it- fears of mind control, fears of women being in a vulnerable hypnotic state and being assaulted by male hypnotists... when the reality is much different- I have no problem with the subject bringing along a mate, mum, dad, BF , GF or whatever - as long as they are comfortable with the situation and that they are aware certain things might be discussed that they might not want the buddy to hear.

Past life regression therapy.
Whether you believe in past lives or not there is now some research that supports the theory of memory genes etc.
Believe it is gobbledygook or not - that is up to the individual; and I will admit I am sat firmly on the fence about such matters... but in my experience it doesn't take away from the benefits of the therapy itself, as the hypnotist/onlooker it is fascinating to see the story unfold through the eyes of the subject.

PLRT:
An example of a session from a long long time ago.
The subject talked to me about what they could see around them in the time they visited, we moved on to a different era and spoke again in total we covered 4 periods of time.
I made notes along the way and a recurring theme was blatantly obvious to me - this theme was what I addressed the therapy at. Let's say for illustration that the main theme in each time period was an emotionally strong woman, a leader, someone highly respected but there was loss .
the loss in connection to remaining strong was what we addressed.
Or as we Yorkshire women would call it - putting your face on (keeping the public front up whilst burying the emotions deep).
So we dealt with these repressed emotions.

~~~~
Points to note:
The subject is perfectly able to talk and communicate - there is no swinging pocket watch and "you are getting sleepier" chant- there can be but it just seems a bit cheesy.
I have sat at a table in a pub with my mates and done a quick 5 minutes with one of them to demonstrate that you can have your eyes open or closed, be in public or private.
In hindsight perhaps I should have suggested she felt benevolent and wanted to buy my beers for the night :D but I didn't - I just did a basic you are feeling really good and positive about life session.
The point is the mindset of the subject and the trust / relationship with the hypnotist.
By all means if you are interested to know more or experience hypnotherapy get in touch with me.
So? We can or not?
**sorry, can't hold myself for this one
From what you said (yah yah I read it all) the girl got more will to buy you a beer... So we can have a girl believing she like us "a lot"?
Hmmm... You said people need to believe in it for it can work.
People here don'T believe a lot on this stuff... but Indonesian does.
Wait for my next trip in indonesia for I can make real life practice :p
Re: post #13 by Bad_azz
Really...and you are the one who scolded me recently on another thread....quote..."Ah, ok... sorry- I tend to not read big lumpy posts lol...I'm too lazy"....seems you're contradicting yourself...but in a good way...your post above IS enlightening.
Now buy me a barrel of beer and I'll subject myself to your hypnosis and believe anything....I'll even remove all my clothes if you so insist...
Whether you believe in past lives or not
Sigh --- so much internet, so little time. I'd happily write volumes of opinions/personal experiences about almost everything that has been written in this thread, but I'm not conceited enough to think other readers should care about my wall-o-text. So let me try to be brief:
Past-life regression is extremely cool as a scientific phenomenon, and there is no requirement that you "believe" to make it interesting.
I'd love to be past-life regressed by a competent hypnotist. Do I think it would reveal an actual past life that I experienced? Eh, no ... probably not. This makes it no less fascinating in terms of what the human psyche can reveal under various conditions.
