Coincidentally I am at present reading a book abut the Russian monarch, his wife three daughters and young, chronically ill son before and after the revolution. From a life of great wealth and privelige with a grand palace and servants they were held for over a year in dank, difficult conditions and surrounded by crude guards who delighted in their humiliation unable to see anything outside of their imprisonment and little contact with others but for an occasional exchange of letters. Then they were murdered by the Bolsheviks. A reminder of how fickle life can be.
In Jimbaran we had leased one place for 5 years and a nearby place for two years. Our lease is due to expire again as the owner of the present house wants to renovate and put up the price. We are moving to a pleasant small house but surrounded by a high wall. Traffic in the area is such that it now takes at least half an hour to travel less then 3 ks. Of course we could move well away from this area and find better and more affordable accommodation but my wife's daughter and sister are close by and as we age, close to necessary facilities so I make this concession. But with all that, still better off than in Australia where there is said to be another million or so people finding it difficult to cover their rents and in danger of joining the several hundred thousand already homeless.
You will be lucky to find an affordable house that meets all your expectations but hopefully by moving away from the most in demand parts of Ubud you may succeed. Let us all know how you fare.
Thanks
No way I would entrust someone to find a home for me. Besides that a local has no clue about what I want, and don't want, this is opening the door for a perfect rip off !
Agreed on the high walls, no way for me. And large windows mandatory.
Can't understand the choice of Ubud. Went there one time and for once the Miss and me instantly agreed "No way".
Tourist trap + the vegan/meditation/"spiritual" crowd.. perfect combination of everything I can't stand.
For our French members : it is a horrible marriage between Lourdes and the Mont St Michel.
The reason I thought about Ubud is because I lived in Padang Bai for the duration of Covid. You are probably right about trusting a local to find a place for me. They think more of the $ than my needs, or understand what I like. I spent most of my time watching YouTube to keep me company. I could go down to the local Warung and sit with the owners, who spoke English, and the occasional tourist would come through, but not many people to talk too. Plus it is hotter than hell there! So I thought if I moved near Ubud, I could have some more contact with English speaking people. I don't care about the all the Yogini's. They are boring to me too. Too fluffy! I lived there for many years, back when I had an import business, so I know all about the tourist BS. Plus there 3 supermarkets to find foods I like, Olive oil, cheeses, Haas avocados, Harum Manis mangos, decent seafood, etc. Where I live now, North of Mengwi, it is all Balinese locals. I like the locals, but we are on a different wavelength of thinking. So where to move too? Padang Bai is mostly locals only, and too hot, and here is too expensive, and boring with locals only. Anywhere south such as Sanur, Kuta, Jimbaran, Canngu, etc. is too busy for me. I'm not a digital Nomad, and don't need gyms, or fancy juices!
I also am single and not into chasing women at clubs anymore. Candidasa is OK for Markit, but I don't know if it's for me. So that's why I thought a nice place, somewhere outside of Ubud. Your idea about long term hotel rental is OK, if I have a nice room, big porch where I can grow my garden pots, big windows, AC, WiFi, etc. so for now I am just throwing out ideas, because this place is nice, but way too expensive for my budget. So for now I will just be happy with what I've got, and see what comes. Thanks
