Renewing driving license without an agent

Two days ago, I went to the Satpas SIM in Jalan Daan Mogot to renew my Indonesian driving license (SIM A). I would like to share my experiences; it is a very easy and straightforward process, and no problem at all to renew your license on your own (and cheaper!).

  1. When you arrive in front of the Satpas SIM Daan Mogot (KM 11), on your left side you find a small building where you have to queue first for your eye examination (surat doktor kesehatan). For this step, you need to prepare a copy of your KTP, a copy of your current SIM and Rp. 25.000 (exact change). Copies can be done there as well, if you didn't bring them with you. At the loket you pay first and hand in your copies and receive in return a pink piece of paper with which you go to queue for the actual eye examination. Sometimes they also measure your blood pressure, but if the queue is long, they might just ask you to skip it and go ahead for the eye stuff. Enjoy the little comedy of “eye examination” while you queue and receive in the end your own certificate.
  2. Now follow the roofed pathway to the entrance of the actual SIM building. You show your eye certificate and get a badge which you have to return when you leave the building later. Find the BRI loket and pay there Rp. 80.000. Go to the loket to the right of BRI and get there the blue application form in exchange of the payment slip. Fill the form (only available in Bahasa Indonesia - so if you don't speak bahasa you could use a translation app on your phone) using the pen you brought from home (or bought previously near the eye examanitation place).
  3. Now go back to the loket pendaftaran perpanjangan SIM WNA (the name might be slightly different, I don’t remember exactly, but watch out for WNA = foreigner), you already passed it on your way to BRI. Here I handed in the following documents: the filled application form including all the papers attached to it, copies of passport and visa, copy of Nota Dinas, copy of assignment letter, and the current SIM (they will keep it). Please note here, that I hold a service visa (visa dinas), so if you have a KITAS you of course have to bring the respective copies of KITAS documents instead of Nota Dinas and assignment letter. The police officer will then give you a small paper and send you to another loket to take your picture and fingerprint (in my case it was loket 16, but that’s the only for female loket, so listen to what the officer tells you)
  4. Go to that loket and wait for your turn to take your picture, finger print and signature, and then move on to loket 30.
  5. Loket 30 (it is outside) is the place where you pick up your SIM. Waiting time depends on how busy it is. In my case it was just one minute. Hand in your paper from the previous loket, get your SIM, drop your badge on the way out and go home with your new SIM .

In my case, the whole procedure took only 1 hour; the place is much less crowded than it used to be with all the agents hanging around; the longest was the queuing for the eye examination.
This is the procedure for RENEWING. Making a first time SIM might be slightly different, with additional steps (I don’t know).

It is really easy, and if you have difficulties to find the respective lokets (like me), just ask the police officers standing around, they are very friendly and helpful. AND you only pay in total Rp. 105.000, instead of 750.000 or whatever as with an agent

I usually renew my driving license at SIM Keliling, a car that provide a service for renew your driving license, only for SIM A and SIM C. The location is always change from time to time. You need to check regularly or call to call center. The price is usually same with you going to Daan mogot but the queue is usually longer.

The annoucement is something like this.

Yes, it is a big trailer and some tents added on. Always macet and chaos when you pass one.

Nice post einahpets.

Not sure if it has changed in the last couple of years because I now have Kitap but the WNA window/loket in Daan Mogot was No.19 and every year the woman there would try and charge me almost double the official fee!
Again, things may have changed recently but the SIM Keliling (mobile SIM processing unit) was only ever for use by locals.

That has changed. You only pay once in the beginning at the bank loket to"buy" the application form. They don't ask for money at any of the other lokets (at least not me...)

That's what I have heard, too, that as a WNA you cannot go there.

Good info - I have added it to the sticky in this subforum, and edited the post to make it clear even to the casual reader when you wrote it (in case someone looks at it in a few years and doesn't realize procedures have changed).

Actually I have read the law regarding SIM, and there is none mention that WNI and WNA paying diffirent fee. I recently manage to get my SIM A and I asking the officer question regarding the due date for the SIM why mine stated 1 year while in Jakarta 5 years. His reply was there is no option for 5 years for WNA in the computer screen and he said probably Jakarta site just tick as WNI. Well since I do not have proper proof I have to take on his word. So end of this year need to renew.

If you have a KITAS you get a SIM for 1 year, KITAP is (supposed to be) 5 years.

SIM Keliling and the ones in certain malls are not available to us, I have tried and was turned away in Bali, Surabaya and Jakarta (With SIM's issued in those cities, and yes I'm stubborn). Anybody know the reason why they can't handle a simple renewal ?

I go to the SIM office in the main police station. Flirt with the ladies that take the paperwork. Hand them what they want and pay the normal fees like everyone else. I go and get my picture taken and wait a few minutes and I have my new SIM. Ta Da. I walk out winking at the ladies who are all giggly.

I am on KITAP, I did explain unless I am on KITAS then it is 1 year. But no he just ignore it, follow "prosudure" on the screen. Unlike android phone it can be update auto but it like and old Nokia phone no update..:frusty::frusty::frusty:

I have SIM A on KITAP for 5 years but they wrote on it that I am a diplomat. Not sure if the profession isn't somehow connected to the length validity of SIM A.

From the internet I found:

Dalam Perkapolri 9/2012 tidak dibedakan jangka waktu SIM untuk WNI dan WNA.

and

Bagi WNA yang menetap di Indonesia masa berlaku SIM 5 tahun.

Yeah,I did told the police but as usual they act blur. Getting reply from Jakarta also no used as they just point to website of theirs but the thing is the system in Cianjur did not reflect it so can't do 5yrs for KITAP. Sometime I just wonder those politician creating the law intentionally do not intend to make a clear cut instruction giving loop hole for you know what.

I got another year extension on mine, despite being eligible for the long one now with my KTP OA. They said if I wanted a 5 year one I would have to do all the tests... even though I have a valid unexpired SIM.
stuff that - takes forever as it is to just get an extension with INTEL messing us around.

because you have to have the permission letter from INTEL stating that you can be permitted to have a SIM or some other BS :D
I guess it would be akin to someone in the UK wanting a licence but having to go to CID to get permission from some slobby plain clothes cop who can't be arsed & hopes you will make a nice donation to speed him up a bit- 'cos he knows you cannot proceed without that letter.

I think that's only in Bandung, I've never had to produce that letter in Jakarta or Bali.

I once tried to get a new license after my old license (was already) expired while I was in Bandung, when I heard I had to go to INTEL for a letter (a few doors down in the same complex) I figured I didn't need it that urgent that it made me want to deal with those guys so I left and made a new one in Jakarta a couple of months later.

My Daughter forgot to renew her driving licence( family trait) she had to go somewhere in Tangerang to renew, sadly she failed the test, reversing on a hill she rolled back, fail, now the problem is she has always driven an Automatic, the test is in a battered old Kijang, with an almost worn out clutch, she tells me a lot of men there have failed and are very angry as they all drive Automatics, some have retested as much as 4 times, why not use your own car for the test, in the U.K. If you use an Automatic car for the test, that's all you are licensed to drive, I have suggested to her to go to a driving school just to get the hang of a Manual gearbox, pride doesn't permit, she thinks a small donation might help next time

I am not sure if I had the INTEL letter or not. I remember I was sent to the back of the police station for something some loket. I still don't have KTP OA.
