Religious education for dual nationality kids

I took those classes including intro to jewish in a public university.


Yes it is the same way, teaching and memorizing that they have in Indonesia and US. There is no different at all. You have to memorize everything. Even more specific in the Jewish intro class.



Religion is not an elective class. Like in us there are electives and there are non. Why do you come to Indonesia if you don’t like laws, procedures or school rules?

I think you don't get it. In European public school (at least in the French one, but I believe in most if not all western Europe), you won't get taught "about Buddha and many other beliefs". In an History course you would learn about the date they appear and in which region they spread their influence for example, you would be taught that there is over 2 billions Christians on earth or over 1,5 billions of Muslims but you won't get excerpt of the Bible. the Tora or the Koran read and taught in class, whichever religion you are.
I think it's what makes some people reacting to your statement.

Well probably not the way you want it but indonesia is making huge progress. In the West, Liberal and conservative are enforcing that their way should be followed. Neither “RESPECT” or “ACCEPT” each other . That’s more messed than the way you said,”Not something Indonesia has really achieved imho.”

And why don’t you treat similar to History class? Why make exaggerating something that is simple? In Indonesia there are lot of movement for anti-bullying and extreme beliefs mockery. If you think your kid’s teacher are being extreme in a bad way by mocking other religion, you could report the teacher to the school and authority which long time ago wasn’t widely informed. But now a lot of progress..

I think I guessed it right by implying you answer my posts without reading them. If you take the time to read them you will both know where I come from, that I am not talking about the US and that I am not unhappy that my kids got taught religion in Indonesia. It's all in my posts and it doesn't take long to read before answering.

You can’t forced someone to think or do what you want. Sometimes things happen for a reason.

Actually I think that's exactly what the religious courses are trying to do. You say also say it's some introduction and basic learning but it is from a young age untill 18. It is not an introduction and it specialises on only one religion (agreed you can pick it) so the courses are not some generalised knowledge that you are inferring.

Why do some people resort to this if you ask one question about a country? Just because I disagree with this part of Indonesia doesn't mean that I don't like the country and don't enjoy living hete......yes i understand it's one law that I don't agree with and all I'm doing by posting here is asking anyone if they found an option out. To be frank this is just a stupid response to the question


Oh and this is not applicable to foreign students in Indonesia so the other option is to give up their dual nationality. Probably a bit extreme for this.

What if they passed a law that everyone has to like football and support a particular football club. You are not allowed to just enjoy the game, you have to choose a club. However you can only support AC Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Man Utd, PSG or Beijing Guoan FC. Your choice will be recorded on your ID card. Then PSG goes around telling everyone that they have 150 million supporters in Indonesia.

That is what this religion system is like.

Wrong, in fact, illegal, because learning about or having someone teach about other beliefs comes under proselytising. What is being talked about here is being forced to learn about one religion as chosen by parents.

I am French, and I can confirm there is absolutely zero religious teaching in government schools, and sure not in University. Now of course we learn in history and geography lessons about which country follows what, with all the changes since 2000 years (and believe me its a bit more complicated than 250 y of US "history"), but nothing about the teaching of those religions.
Now, of course if you want to send your kids to a non government catholic school you can.
Religion is a private, personal matter. No government should have any saying in a person's choice in that domain.
I am not religious, and under no circumstances whatever would I adopt any religion, let alone one that has nothing in common with my general / historic culture.

Please elaborate on the Alsace thing ?

Why should they ? Catholics don't feel discriminated because there is no cross on the wall in a public school classroom ?

In the Alsace area there are mandatory religion classes in elementary and high school. It’s different from the rest of France, historical reasons I guess.

Don’t forget not all religions in all countries have gone through the enlightenment phase. That explains a lot here of course.

Yes, historical reasons being those territories at a moment were under German rule. Wiki iz your friend.

Yes the school I'm teaching at now requires this. However you can sign a form with drawing them from the classes. That's all I did.

One bonus of the online teaching system is that the religion and praying classes have been cancelled.
