Btw ... I am looking for a phrase in Bahasa Indonesia (or a good translation).
In Dutch there is a phrase "Throwing in your own windows" ... meaning something like "You ruin your own case" or "you ruin it for yourself". Maybe in English there is a phrase like this too.

But: what's a good translation of this phrase in bahasa Indonesia?

I agree that shooting oneself in the foot is best English example but I do not know of an Indonesian equivilent.

"merusaknya untuk dirimu sendiri" is a bit weird, just tell them "merusak diri sendiri" which mean self destruction or you can also use "senjata makan tuan"

Not sure about Indonesian, but the English phrase "to shoot oneself in the foot" seems appropriate
