POS Indonesia

Just curious, is there a location in particular that's riskiest in your experience for card fraud?
Airports in the US. Chicago, and Newark.

I had a credit card that I had for a few months, but have never used. Bought some food at the airport once, and the same day, had a few fraudulent attempts around the country. Never used it anywhere else.

Had to send a form to HSBC HKG. Standard airmail enveloppe.
Went to the Post Office, and there we go :
"Only one way, by EMS, cost 372.000 Rp
Me : Glurps...OK
"You have phone number for HKG ?"
Me : Hey, this is HSBC, one of the biggest bank in HKG...and it's a PO Box !
"You have passport ? " WTF, passport for posting a letter ? Ok, KTP did it.

No complain about the staff, friendly and smiling, but My God the bloody system / organisation is from the 1950's !

Good thing you were only sending. If receiving they would have added a customs fee.

I had a friend visiting from the US several months ago and he left his sunglasses at my house, I mailed them back to him from Bali to Washington State in the US using Indonesian Post, cost was less than idr200,000 and he received them in 10 days.

With sending stuff (to HK or Europe for instance) I have the same experience; not so expensive and rather good service. Just make sure you leave the box open so you can show them the contents. In our case they make a picture, make a quick phone call to Customs and you’re all set.

I did post some mails / letters to HKG and France in the past (2 or 3 years ago) and I remember it was MUCH cheaper.

Years ago wife was sending Batik to people in the US. Rp270,000 per kilo then. I have no idea now.

There are services for delivering stuff to/from US to Indonesia. I recall costs were $13 USD. Not sure if that was per kilo, or pound. My wife did it once to the US. I can ask for more details, if anyone is interested.

At least over here are no seagulls (as in the UK)…

Going to the Post office to get clarification sounds like the right move. Maybe they can explain the sudden increase or offer some resolution.

my daughter just sent me a wee care packet from the US with about $20 worth of biscuits and chocolate. Cost her $100 to send and I had to pay another $45 duty to receive it
Wont be doing that again

Yep, and I really don’t see which US chocolate they won’t have here… if not via the regular supermarkets, online. Only some very new and/or rare variants like Snickers Espresso or specific Trader Joe stuff might make sense.

A friend had ordered a huge amount of chocolate like Milka, Lindt and Côte d’Or in Europe and shipped via a container service that we normally use. Assuming it would take a month, but after 7 months she finally received her completely destroyed (>50° C) and expired products. Expensive experiment.

Much better to send with a freight forwarding service that often combines smaller packages. Costs about $26 per KG.

The last time I received the cards was last November, maybe it helped that they were sent via FedEx instead of USPS. They were also two metal credit cards one for my wife and one for me, so I would assume they would attract more interest than a plastic debit card, but all 3 times in past 2 years made it directly to my house with no issues.
I learned from a recent case (less than two months ago) involving someone I know who sent a debit card from Europe to Indonesia using an international courier. It took about 10 days to arrive. Arriving in the person address in Indonesia, no fees, levies, or taxes paid.

If an item sent via post office from abroad, it will be received by the Indonesian post office.

So, I stand by my previous conclusion: the levy is "illegally" charged by the post office staffs, likely to top up their salaries.

If others could share their 'recent' experiences, we could all benefit from learning about them.

No fees when International currier? Have you ever thought that the fee you pay the currier already include them? An envelope from the US to Indonesia via FedEx is over US$150.00. Even with postal charges in US for Priority Mail and charges in the Indonesian side, it is still less that what the International currier charges. As for illegal fees that go to employees, not if you get a receipt and if you pay without one, it is you contributing to unlawful acts and making it harder for others wanting to do things legally.

Did your daughter send the package via USPS or through a courier service? If it was a courier, would you mind specify which one?

usps then pos indonesia. The bill was from customs not pos indonesia

A few years ago they changed the duty free amount for packages from 75USD to a laughable 3USD. And that includes the cost of shipping and shipping insurance.
This explains a lot. Last October (2023) I sent matching Halloween pyjamas for my nephew's family (his kid likes skeletons patterns), total goods value $45. Since it was a week before Halloween, I sent by International Express (EMS), paid $69 for it. It got to customs 2 days before Halloween and the tracking was stuck there.

My nephew went to check on it and they wanted him to pay Rp 2 juta ($200) to get it. I went, "yeah, forget about it. Kid, this is why I don't sent you sh*t from overseas." My wife stopped buying my family members in Indonesia birthday gifts a couple of years ago 'cause they end up stacked at home waiting for one of them to visit. We've found since that even when they did, they can't take them all.

Surprisingly that parcel just got returned this month (10 months later), which was a silver lining in an otherwise #&$! experience.

This is another sad story of the greed and corruption, so prevalent here in Indonesia! It's outrageous that it cost $150 to send a large envelope via Fed-Ex.And why on Earth should a $45 set of pajamas cost RP. 2 Juta. This greed is why Indonesia will never get off the ground, and be a prosperous country!
