Quite some photography and camera buffs here, so this might be interesting:

Cynthia Boll has won the rather prestigious Dutch journalistic photographic price the Silver Camera. It is already in its 70th edition.

Here you can see an article about the price, and the pictures of the particular series:

Today in the news ..

Almost half of the great Chinese cities sinks, according to a recent study. The extraction of groundwater, but also the weight of all buildings is one of the biggest culprits. With rising sea levels, that is an ominous development.

Subsidence is a known problem in countries such as the United States, Iran, Indonesia and also the Netherlands. In the early twentieth century, some cities in the US sometimes even fell meters in a few decades, just like Jakarta, which drops by about fifteen centimeters every year. Some cities, such as Mexicostad that partly sinks by around 36 centimeters a year, are in the long term even to disappear completely.

But the problem of subsidence is greatest in China, just because of the amount of people who can be affected, says Robert Nichols, director of the British Tyndall Center for Climate Change Research. The professor of climate adjustment has been researching subsidence worldwide for years. "Around 45% of the Chinese population lives in cities on the coast, making the scale of potential disasters greater," he says.

The main cause of subsidence in urban areas is withdrawal of groundwater for domestic consumption. This increases due to further urbanization.
