Anything in particular you would change? Myself, I am not too thrilled with the dancing girls. Maybe because it is a very busy photograph.

I think the problem is the saturation between the skin and the outfit is so different. The skin has low saturation while the outfit's is way too high.

Exactly.
As much as I love must of the pictures, this one is a bit weird with an (imho) unrealistic colors for both the outfit and the jewelry adornment (the gold-ish color is too "aggressive"). Unless of course if they are straight out of a modern Thai temple.

It's a bit garbage in - garbage out, isn't it? If the b&w picture was high quality, the results are much better it seems. Some are great, others so so.

It also seems that gold and yellow are difficult colors.

Yes gold and yellow can go from one extreme to another. Trying to find a tone that looks really goldish since gold is a lot more orange then what people call gold. I guess with 2.4 million colors to choose from, I will keep looking.

The above photo. What is it, the soda shop kids? A lot of white and a big assortment of skin tones. Besides the one girl, I don't see much for lighter colored hair. Brunette to dk. brown. Clean up I don't think would be too difficult. Are you going to give it a try?

Yeah, I'm seriously considering some old pics to be cleaned up and printed in a bigger format. When framed they would make great presents (look Om; a picture of you as a kid).

Obviously the Dutch had quite some schools here. Most of them were in Batavia of course. The HBS (Hogere Burger School) was a higher level high school of the Dutch; only that one allowed access to universities. It was the highest level of education in Nederlands Indië, they never got a Gymnasium. Later together with Gymnasium and Atheneum it partly merged into VWO (Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs, loose translation; university preparing education), and another part became HAVO (prep for non university college). But it was before my time.

With those clothes and tropical uniforms they do look a bit like workers in an ice cream parlor or so, yes.

I think all these shops on your picture have become the Matahari.

This is the same street in 1864. Looks more like a mix of the Wild West and Hong Kong.

Really interesting, how do you determine what colours and shades to use and how long does it take as it seems a very difficult and pains taken process, as a by the way I told my son before he visited Jakarta pavements were few, so he was quite surprised that more pedestrians weren't knocked down, as people walk with their backs to the traffic,were as I being a stupid Brit walk facing the on coming traffic, couple of times on walking On what I consider the right side been told I'm wrong,weird, at least I would like to see and try to avoid what is going to hit me

Colors for the street scene above were totally from my artistic freedom to choose whatever I wanted. I thought color was in order to cheer the place up since I am quite certain that most colors then were a beige or off white. Some pastels did exist I was told but primarily, light earth tones. Just more cheery to me with colors. Indonesia on general needs a Paint up, fix up, clean up period every year I think.
