He pointed out what he said were catastrophic mistakes by the Bolsheviks in recognising Ukraine as a republic, and ceding land to end the war with Germany in 1918. My point is on the (non) effectiveness of sanctions. So anything 2018 / 2020 is irrelevant from that point of view.

Be that as it may, there are seven former Soviet States have joined NATO and after seeing what has happened with the unaligned Ukraine I imagine those new NATO members are very happy they joined up.
