Novak Djokovic fights against deportation

Personally, I don't find millionaire elite sports people having a tantrum because they're not being offered preferential treatment "huge". A breakthrough in cancer research, resolving any of the numerous world geopolitical issues, discovering microbial life on Mars etc would be news I'd consider "huge".

I guess it's a reflection of the society we live in when so many are enthralled by this story - I don't share the same fascination for celebrity or high profile sports personality articles.

I agree with your sentiment, of course, but I assume the characterization "huge" was written while pony's tongue was firmly in cheek.

I pay no attention to sports of any kind, but am good friends with a former tennis pro who follows the sport closely - he says Djokovic has always been a complete asshole. And it's fun to see assholes get their comeuppance, so I can understand how the story is entertaining on at least one level.

Djokovic was spending the Orthodox Christmas in detention on Friday having had his visa cancelled on arrival in Australia when officials ruled his documentation was insufficient to allow him entry to the country while unvaccinated.

The law also applies to 'distinguished' persons? Stop the press!

Novax has been the centre of media attention since his arrival last week. Firstly it's because of his unvaccinated status which made people doubt that he would play in AO. Then he boasted of having medical exemption from Australia and told his fans that he would defend his grand slam title. Yet, he somehow was led to believe that his medial exemption from Tennis Australia to compete in AO is sufficient to enter Australia - completely ignore the difference of jurisdiction between state and federal government. Secondly, Novax becomes interesting because anti vaxxer movement see him as their new poster boy. Thirdly, Novax is detained in a hotel used as immigration detention centre by the fed government along with other refugees. Novax detention sheds more light on the condition of refugees being detained there. However, none of the antivaxxers seem to care and orgainised a protest in front of the hotel carrying sign: Free Novak.

His team applied for the wrong visa and he was denied entry. Nothing to do with the vaccine. That was to play in the tournament.
He can go home anytime but he appealed so they stuck him in the detention hotel the same they do with anyone else.
If he wants to leave and be deported he can walk out the door now

If it was Indonesia he would be deported and probably put on the blacklist so he couldn't come back in the future.
His team need to join some kind of internet forum where they could find out all about immigration laws
If it was Indonesia, the land of the rule of law, he would be welcomed with a red carpet and bent rules.

In Indonesia you can often bend the rules if you’re quiet about it. But, if the story hits the media, then the gov’t has no choice but to make an example out of you and hand out the appropriate punishment.

Exactly. Publicizing it very often, if not always, provokes the opposite of what is expected.

So the day after he allegedly tested positive for covid (i think it was December 16) he did a mask less publicity photo shoot at a kids tennis center. I expect his story is going to change again.

Let's just say I'm sure it's not that difficult in Serbia to get a document saying you've had COVID. Especially if you're the most famous person in the country.

Looks like the state of Australia lost the case on the kangaroo court.

Their only option now is to cancel his visa using a general security reason and issue him with a 3-year entry ban. The idea that they'll now happily let him in, as a symbol of the anti-vax movement, so he can pick up a million dollars and go home - well it's just not going to happen. I know his Dad thinks he's Jesus, but he's not going to take on an entire country and win, especially one like Australia with their immigration rules.

Sure, the Australian government should do that and embarrass themselves even more and extend this PR nightmare showing that they do not accept court verdicts, like in third-world countries.

They just lost the case about their own immigration rules in their own court.
