We had the Keurig coffee maker in the US. Wife loved it, I hated it. Have to keep making cup after cup to get your morning fix. That gets costly.
Yeah, Keurig is the American version, it is more similar to Dolce Gusto though. The pressure system (bar) is somewhat less advanced. But over here the same story; if you did not like it, you probably picked a 'wrong' variant, there are many around. And if you prefer the 'carton tasting' American coffee in the diners, you will not appreciate a ristretto or so. The caffeine level is depending more on beans and roasting btw, an espresso does not necessarily contain more caffeine, even if it is 'stronger'.
Both (Keurig and DG) had a launch approach aimed at the masses; get the capsules asap in the regular shops and supermarkets. The Nespresso cup was (pre patent expiry) only sold in their own specialized shops*. And the advertsing campaign was aimed to offer a more luxurious image, even using a George Clooney in funny but upscale ads. Illy had the same approach of 'selling a lifestyle'.
That has changed now; they even sell 'refill solutions' for the cups. That must make the inventors cringe.
