What do you think about the engine's power with the Veloz? I imagine that my driving will be lots of "stop & go" on local roads (running errands, etc.) with a few longer drives each month.

Power seems fine. We’re not racing it anywhere. The CVT transmission certainly seems better than our Livina.

Forget white and black. Anyone who wants to be hip and trendy on four wheels chooses stone grey. Well, that’s what the (mainly German) car manufacturers think.

It’s the new trend color for cars, which looks a lot like freshly poured cement or the skin of a mouse. Now car manufacturers give it naturally a much more creative and poetic (read: commercial) name. From 'Crayon' with Porsche to 'Brooklyn Grau' at BMW.

I don’t see it happening here, It will be white, black and then silver for quite some time to come.

The Mazda CX-5 is also available in one of these colors btw, it is called Zircon Sand. They call it a metallic but in real life it looks rather dof.

The number two is also a Toyota: the Corolla. It is mainly the sedan version but the Corolla Cross, the SUV / crossover version, is also doing rather well. Even in Indonesia, where you would pay approx. 460-500 juta for that (hybrid) model.

But if you look closely, you see that the local cars do have older technologies ….. and -not unimportantly- are not prone to many recalls.

Toyota in the US is recalling (practically) all Corolla Cross cars since there seems to be a flaw and construction error in the dashboard that could give issues with the passenger airbag.

Now that’s a nice example about communication. Toyota Europe states its cars are not affected. Clear. I haven’t heard anything from Toyota Indonesia (yet). Obviously you could argue it’s probably only applicable for left hand drive car markets but still….

Jaguar Land Rover will now call itself JLR and that includes a new logo. So from now on, the company communication will be interspersed with this JLR logo.

The big news is that JLR will be positioning Range Rover, Defender and Discovery as brands. Currently they are model lines. For example, the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are still formally Land Rover models, as are the Discovery, Discovery Sport and Defender.

There are obviously other examples in history where a model became a brand. A recent one is Corvette. I also remember British Leyland’s Princess, the worst car I ever owned.

It’s rather unclear what ‘Land Rover’ will be, a badge?

Range Rover being split off makes sense (try saying Land Rover Range Rover without sounding silly!), for Discovery and Defender I'm not so sure

With the Corvette example, or Lexus, Infiniti, Genesis - the original brand still exists as well

A quick google search is telling me that Tesla guarantees their batteries for 150k miles (240k km) and typical lifespan is 300-500k miles.

In the US carmakers are required to guarantee their batteries for at least 8 years / 100k miles (161k km), meaning range degradation no more than 30% or they have to give you a new battery pack

Kia actually threw in an extra two years, though they halve it if the car is sold to another owner.

So yes, these batteries last. Not just on Teslas, the Leaf has a decent record too (even though the old models have air cooled batteries that degrade more)

The opposite is also true. Many accidents lately in our kampung from electric scooters hitting each other and pedestrians because they couldn't hear each other.

I'm a fan of EVs but e-scooters are a mistake IMHO.

That being said, in some markets the lack of sound problem is solved: at low speeds EVs must emit an artificial sound so pedestrians can hear them. Not sure if this also applies to hybrids that can travel on battery power alone!

Electric Kias even do a beep beep sound when reversing, like trucks.

I just looked. Both about the same. Toyota is new for 2023 whereas Honda is a facelift. Both have smart entry. Toyota has hill start assist which might be good for ibu?

Take her to both dealers and let her decide.

If you consider the Toyota, you could also go for the cheaper Ayla counterpart. Don’t forget the car is in fact a Daihatsu, build by Astra Indonesia. So there are no quality differences.

The Brio is the most popular LCGC in Indonesia. So its second hand value is also a tiny bit higher. But it’s getting somewhat old (2018), I would not buy a new one anymore if a new model or major facelift could arrive soon.

Engines are very comparable. The Toyota has an automatic, the Honda a CVT. But in practice that doesn’t make a big difference.

Shocking news; Volvo has decided that the electric XC40 is no longer called XC40, but EX40. XC40 becomes EX40, C40 becomes EC40.

Yes, these cars are available in Indonesia. 1,3 billion. Which makes them aprox. €20K more expensive than in the west.

There is no information if the smaller and brand new EX30 will ever make it to Indonesia. Don’t forget Volvo Cars is part of the Chinese Geely and that they have other brands for this market.

In the news about S Dewi's suami KPK etc, they confiscated a Mini Cooper and a RR - turns out that he has TWO, both costing several hundred thousand $ each
They mentioned he hadn't paid the tax

For ONE Rolls Royce EVERY YEAR his tax is 99juta - 100million a year EVERY year just for one car on top of the billions to buy it, and he has 2? Why (well I mean I guess they were free if he was taking the money etc)

But such an impractical car here but the tax is crazy

Not just to buy it but then every year on top. The mind boggles of their stupidity

When I worked for a billionaire in Jersey (a tax haven island) he had an ex demo Bentley in a garage gathering dust and a silver gull wing mercedes (McQueen?) but his daily car was a bright yellow VW beetle called Noddy

He didn't waste money poncing about Jersey at 20mph in a fancy car

The rather popular Honda HR-V will get a facelift.

As you can see, the grille on the front is not as reverse trapezium shaped anymore.

There are also some changes on the back and the interior.

I’m sometimes using an independent driver with a Mobilio for longer distances. He bought the car approx. 1,5 years ago and every time I’m sitting in there I notice it goes downhill fast.

The car still looks very good. But rattling etc. gets worse every time. Last time it was underneath the rear seat, it sounded like an old spring bed. And the ceiling aircon unit also squeaks when taking a ‘sleeping policeman’. The HR-V seems to be much more solid.

So if you consider ‘Indonesian’ cars from Japanese manufacturers (Nissan, Toyota, Daihatsu, Mitsubishi, Honda) be weary about some quality differences.

I can say the exact opposite about our BRV. We bought it new and it has been a great car 5 years later. 2 batteries, a set of tires and a window switch is all we have needed so far, other than oil changes, etc. It could die tomorrow but so far, it has been great. Especially considering the price. Still feels really solid even on a bad road.
