Interesting different approaches...
Now with our son having done elementary school in the USA, I know the -let's call it Dutch (not Asian!)- method on the right, is also taught in similar versions over there.
And the advantage of the (ridiculized) cumbersome method is that at least the kids understand the theory how it works. The method on the right with adding a "0" on every new line was for some just as teaching ? how to press buttons.
Obviously at the time we were taught something like this should be a mental calculation:
10x35 + 2x35.
