Just sayin hi! Im half indo / half filo

I read filo, and I think of a pastry puff. :)

I’ve lived in Indonesia for almost 15 years. It’s got it’s challenges, but I quite like it.

Welcome to the forum!

In a generalized way I would say Indonesians are more polite and friendly towards foreigners than might be the case in Australia. It is more affordable here living on a pension and I am used to living in the tropics. So from where do you originally hail?

Half Indo would make you 1/4 Indonesian. Of course it doesn’t exist; Indo just means mixed European-Indonesian.

Esp. popular in the sinetron (soaps) on TV.

Quite some years ago I was queuing in the supermarket and the guy in front of me spoke English to the cashier. She reacted rather negative and kept on speaking BI and fast. He said: “I really don’t understand, I’m not Indonesian but from the Philippines!” Made me realize some people from the greater region might have it more difficult than me, with the lenience I get as a Bule.

Salamat po and welcome!
Been here 10+ years. Hating every minute of it the first half. Since Covid it has been much better and enjoyable. (unrelated but just using it as a timeline). Trick is just to avoid traffic, dealing with govt/immigration that reduces half the stress already!

Why would a person stay for five years, in a country they hated? 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏾‍♀️

My wife is Thai. Looks Indonesia, maybe, but is not. When living in Indo and at the market she would pretend to be dumb so as to not get over charged. Weird but that is what she told me.

My wife is Indonesian and in Thailand, Philippines and Myanmar she would be charged local prices for entry into places of interest rather than the "special" price for tourists.

Sadly this is a classic case of Racism that happens here for Us! She looks like one of them, so She gets a break! In The US, and I assume the Rest of the Western World, everyone pays the same price, (Too Much) for any item bought a store, No Matter a Person Features!
Because We are foreigners with a different Skin color and facial features, We must be rich, so it's OK to screw us over!
Come on the days of Colonialism are gone! I shouldn't be held responsible for what the ancestors did! 🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏼‍♂️🤪

So you are 100% against reparations as well?
What are you talking about? I don't recall my ancestors colonizing anyone. In Thailand or Indonesia. I never overcharged anyone for anything, because they were from a different country than mine! Why should I be overcharged for things because I'm White? I do think in my country, that the Native People should be taken care of and provided with everything they need, because the White European invaders took their lands! My ancestors were still in Europe, when all that happened!
What about you? Do you like being overcharged because of your skin color?

I believe that anything that takes skin color into account for any reason is patently racist. I asked just to clarity your stance on reparations. As you may know it is getting to become a hot topic in some American cities and generally based on that because of slavery, black people are owed compensation of some kind. Oddly enough, Native Americans have never been considered for reparations even though they seem to have a much stronger case for them over anyone else.

I am, yes.

The case of the American natives is completely different from European countries colonization all over the world.
In the sense that their country was invaded and definitively taken over by Europeans who later called themselves American (patriots) and claimed the country was now theirs. Same as in Australia.
Concerning France, England, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands apologizing to their ex colonies and erasing historic personallities from our culture I say NO !
We have nothing to apologize for !
Or should we go apologize to the Palestinians for the crusades a few centuries ago as well ?
And don't forget what we brought to those countries... see SGP, HKG or India !

I haven´t been in all the asian countries but from the few I have been, the ones I found people very similar to Indonesian people, are the people from Phillippines, I was very surprise how much they look like Indonesian or at least like Balinese! everybody there was thinking my husband was Phillipino

You can say No, but I'm sure the people of those countries would have been just fine and happy if you kept your Asses out of their lives! The European Invaders didn't go there just to say Hi! There went there to exploit something, and built infrastructure to make it more convenient! 🫵😭

When my GF, now my wife, were traveling extensively around Asia, she almost always got treated as a local. Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong/China.

Thailand was probably the funniest, as the airport taxi driver talked to her nonstop in Thai for at least 30 minutes. She kept telling him in English she wasn’t Thai. She got the hotel staff to teach her, “I’m not Thai” the first night. :)
