In an effort to eradicate the pesky vermin, the Jakarta provincial government has offered to give a Rp 20,000 bounty for each rat caught. The plan, which obviously could not possibly backfire, was promoted by Vice Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat who has stated that Jakarta is currently fighting the vermin. The provincial government will coordinate efforts all the way to the RT/RW level and Djarot on Tuesday (18/10/16) at Hotel Luansa, urged the public to collect the rats.

Rats that are caught will be handled by the city's parks department, who will bury the dead rats, and use them as fertilizer.

Similar efforts in the past in India (against snakes) and in Hanoi (also against rats), have had the opposite effect, which in hindsight should have been fairly obvious. It is unclear whether the Jakarta government has heard of the Cobra Effect, nor is it clear if the bounty will apply to "tikus berdasi".

Man, I could be a billionaire if this extends to Bekasi! :D

I'm sure the breeding pens (not kampungs) are being installed already. At least if they get loose no one will notice.

I will collect all those that the dogs kill and put them in the freezer as of now...

I am glad you jumped into cynical mode before I did - knowing what I know that's exactly what I thought.
Wasn't it chairman Mao who tried to do a similar exercise in china to eradicate starlings, flies and rats ??

All I know is that many of the sate merchants are going to be pissed if they can't find their product. They may have to actually revert back to Ayam or kambing.

Rats breed notoriously fast. This is going to be a serious money spinner for a clever entrepreneur/rat farmer...

When you think the government can't possibly come up with more ridiculous things to do...

at 20,000 per rat that's going to cost the Jakarta administration billions every month - people will make a (good) living from it whilst it lasts. That is if it even gets off the ground - Personally I hate rats a good rat is a dead one as far as I am concerned. I welcome the initiative but I personally don't see how its workable, remember the dog cull in Bali ?? they must have wiped out thousands of stray dogs here but they hardly put a dent in the dog population.

Think of it this way. Sometimes you liked to hand out some Rupiah to the neighbor kids for some treats or what nots. Now you just have to give them a dead rat and they should be overjoyed. Probably a good increase in value over that dirty old Rupiah they were getting. I think that may be the go to way of the future. See a beggar in the street, drop a dead rat into that old chips bag they like to rattle. I would think they just couldn't stop thanking you.

Or go to Hardys with a wallet full of dead rats tails as payment :pound:That'd go down well with the cashier ay ??

I'm waiting for the person to walk into the collection office with a government worker over their shoulder looking to collect.

then you should talk to Ahmad Dhani

Evidently, he is only worth Rp20,000

This must have been your best one ever, C.

Anyway, Dhani has -after bribing his kid off the hook and his Prabowo support- yet another project. The vice regency of Bekasi.
