In an effort to eradicate the pesky vermin, the Jakarta provincial government has offered to give a Rp 20,000 bounty for each rat caught. The plan, which obviously could not possibly backfire, was promoted by Vice Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat who has stated that Jakarta is currently fighting the vermin. The provincial government will coordinate efforts all the way to the RT/RW level and Djarot on Tuesday (18/10/16) at Hotel Luansa, urged the public to collect the rats.
Rats that are caught will be handled by the city's parks department, who will bury the dead rats, and use them as fertilizer.
Similar efforts in the past in India (against snakes) and in Hanoi (also against rats), have had the opposite effect, which in hindsight should have been fairly obvious. It is unclear whether the Jakarta government has heard of the Cobra Effect, nor is it clear if the bounty will apply to "tikus berdasi".
