All reciprocal. They should have given the US a better deal to start with and they wouldn't be looking at large increases. Sometimes you get what you give.

Correct. It is half the custom duty and taxes that those countries apply to the US imported goods.

"Customs Duties and Taxes on ImportsThe highest rates of duty are levied on alcoholic drinks (80 to 90%), and cars (60%). Luxury goods form a separate category, and taxes can go up to 170% for luxury cars. Indonesia uses the Nomenclature of the Harmonized System."

I remember the year, just before Christmas, when the Government decided to increase the Tariff/tax on imported Alcohol. It went up something like 400%. The hotels and shops were panicking, because the booze was being held up on large ships, not allowed to come to port. So of course, everyone had to bite the bullet, and pay the higher fees, which of course went directly to the consumers! This was a shock to everyone.
Please excuse me if I am not correct in my math, but I know it did go up substantially and was a huge blow to everyone! What is happening now is not good for anyone except the Rich. They are not fazed by an increase in prices. Also Trump is Lying Big Time, when He says he is giving a Tax break also. This Tax break only benefits the Wealthy! It is an out right slap in the face to all the middle class, and poor people!

Does that include the evil penguins he put tariffs on?
What a nothing burger of a story. Somewhere in the past there a trade agreement with the US for some reason and it was recorded. Since everything done now was reciprocated, nobody bothered to check every line item that was on the list. The real question is who made the original trade agreement, not the fact that a line item was copied under the the Trump admin.

After doing the smallest amount of research it looks like mistakes were made about imports under the Biden administration and there were records of trade with the islands. It was just now caught. So when Trump started looking, there was a recorded trade deficit there. Put the blame where it's due.

The rates aren't reciprocal though, regardless of what Trump and his team of merry wizards claim. They tried to work out a rate which would give tariff totaols equal to the US trade deficit per country. Reciprocal would be the same rates as imposed by the trading partner.

Semantics. The goal is balancing trade. If you don't like them then come to the table and negotiate. That's what all of this about in the first place. No one wants to negotiate when they are clearly winning so you may have to give them a little motivation.

Explanation of the calculation...

Don't run after the first formula, read further...

Indonesia is sending a group of trade negotiators to Washington to try and work out a deal with the US Administration. Hopefully Indonesia realizes that the tax/duties/tariffs they demand from the US goods will have to be on the table. They probably can't get away with just saying they will just buy more from the US. The US Tariffs will decimate the seafood industry here as well as the furniture exports. They have to bring the added fees down.

Great business for the Washington hospitality business as delegates pour in from all around the world. With so many seeking appointments with the great man there will be quite a bit of waiting as he will also be busy playing golf. Australia has faitfhully ventured into wars to curry favour with the US. "All the way with LBJ" when LBJ visited Australia during the Vietnam war. We have flattered ourselves that we are great mates with the US but this illusion will soon dissipate as Australia is relegated while countries like Japan, Germany, the UK and other heavyweights press for preferential treatment

I am feeling disgusted with the current situation now! Before there was more give and take between all the countries, and it was more balanced. Now America has a Dictator wannabe, that is Out of Control! China is going to take advantage of this and become the new Big Boss!
I can only hope the People of America can somehow Stop this Madman and take back control, before he completely bankrupts the country, and sets it back 50 years! It shocks me to see how he is able to bankroll from all the delegates from foreign countries coming there to gain favor. This is illegal but somehow, he is able to bend the rules! I'm sure all the people that voted for him are starting to wake up, and see he is Screwing them too! 🙉🙊🙈🫵

This is exactly the game Trump is playing. He never intended for the tariffs to stick, he just wants everyone to negotiate on his terms.

Sure but he shouldn't be too confident that everyone will agree to his terms. Look at Vietnam. They agreed to drop their tarrifs if and when they and the US can come to an agreement in a trade deal. Let's not forget that China is right at the door step already with a big foot in the door.

Dont forget that several years ago due to Trump 1st Empire and raising labor cost in China, a lot of Chinese manufacturers moved their production to Vietnam where is was assembled, packaged and rebrand "Made in VN".
So, of course their export to the US exploded.

In post #10, the White House shared the calculation method for U.S. tariffs on other countries, which may initially appear as a complex mathematical formula. However, a simpler and more easily understandable version of the formula is also provided in the same post.

Trump's tariff policy isn't primarily about enforcing reciprocal tariffs; it's focused on balancing trade. Countries that run a trade surplus with the U.S. are expected to negotiate deals to purchase more American products. This is relatively easy to accomplish with U.S. trading partners, given that the U.S. exports high-value goods and services. For example, one squadron of F-35I fighter jets can be worth over $2.5 billion. That’s not even counting other military gears, training, consulting services, and more.

The Indonesian government just played the same game with Apple and came out $1 billion US richer. It didn't happen overnight. Both parties had to lose for a little while and let the reality set in. Same story here. It's an economic game of chicken. Who can last the longest before giving in? Vietnam is already buying everything they can from China, The only things they are buying from the US are things they can't get otherwise.

I'm pretty sure Jokowi did exactly the same thing a few years back when he was telling everybody they should stop buying exports and start buying Indonesian products instead. For example one thing he did was reduce the de minimis limit to $3, which now means is pretty much impossible to receive any package from abroad without having to pay huge taxes on it.

The problem that all these politicians have with their 'buy local' policies is that a lot of people like imported products because they are better than what they can get at home.

On every ordered package I receive from abroad in Indonesia I am charged minimum 44-45%.
