We have recently gotten my mother-in-law a new Indonesian passport. Her old one had been expired for about 5 years. I was a little surprised that the new one is now valid for 10 years. She is in her late 60’s, if that makes any difference.

For all previous passports Indonesian family members have gotten, they’ve always been 5 years only.

Is this a question or a statement? Yes all new biometric Indonesian passports are valid for 10 years and have the signature on the details page too

What's the earliest an Indonesian can apply for a new passport. Do they have to wait until 3 months before it expires or for example is 6 or 9 months OK?

Just wondering when this changed. My wife got hers renewed in 2020, and my daughters in 2022, both 5 year visas. I know in the US, kids passports are always 5 year until they hit 16.

I would definitely do it a year before
1) a lot of places don't allow entry with less than 12 or 6 months validity remaining
2) you dont know how long it will take although these days it seems to only take 1 or 2 days and cost less than 2jt
3) you will get the o/s time added on to the new expiry date anyway

What I mean was were you asking if thats the norm?

But yes since the last year at least its been 10 years

EDIT Since Sept 29th 2022 officially

The Ministry of Law and Human Rights has passed a new regulation extending the validity of Indonesian passports from five years to 10 years.

The regulation, signed by Minister Yasonna Laoly on Sept. 19, came into effect on Sept. 29.

Those eligible for the new 10-year passport are Indonesian citizens aged 17 and above. Passports of children holding dual citizenships will only be valid until they are old enough to declare whether or not they want to remain Indonesian citizens.

It’s also worth noting that valid 5-year passports will not have their validity automatically extended to 10 years. People with valid 5-year passports will receive their 10-year passports in their next renewal.

Wife just renewed her passport 3 weeks ago while she was in Jakarta. The expiry date of her old passport is Feb 2024.
Rp. 1000,000 for one day service. She got new passport valid for 10 years.

And I bet the expiry of the new one is 2034 not 2033

Which countries require 12 months validity?

I’ve been to 60 countries, and have only seen 3 months (or 90 days) and 6 months, for normal tourist visits.

You want me to list them all?
Point is that majority of countries INSIST on at least 6 months validity of passport and some do ask for 12 months, usually the weird ones
I will spend the next hour googling to make a list for you if you like :)

My bad, I might be getting confused with the visa application or the work permit

e.g for Indonesia
Citizens intending to renew their Indonesian work permits will usually require a passport with more than 12 months validity.

Also some countries now insist that you hold a 10 year passport not 5 years

I have checked and it does seem for entry immigration requirement it looks like 6 months is the norm but to apply for the visa itself some countries ask for 12 months validity on the passport and then when you enter 6 months validity remaining on the passport

Oh well you got short changed a few months usually it's 10+6months
I'm not aware of 10Y + 6 months. My current passport valid exactly 5 years after issued date. None of my 8 old passports had validity more than 5 years.
The new ministry regulation no. 18/2022, article 2A clearly stipulate the "maximum validity" 10 years after issue date for regular passport.
