Indonesia set to introduce strict new law banning sex outside of marriage

This story seems to be hitting the news around the world. However the law is applied, in the end it's the headlines that people remember.

Terrible publicity for Indonesia when they are trying to promote tourism and sell the "second home" visa program.

I am sure lots of prospective visa applicants and tourists will be having second thoughts.
Why do they need to care about the tourism if their main goal is to win the vote of the right wing.

In the past I posted this thread
Criminalisation for Couples who Check In to the Hotel but Not Married.
You will not believe it is even go much further, as it is not only Check In to the Hotel but they are now introducing a stricter new law banning sex outside of marriage. It is only the country who apply Shariah Law will ever have this practice.
They are moving closer. Just wait in the future, if you are mixed race marriage, your children could be stoned to death because of committing adultery before they got married.
They are going back to the stone age.

What's your point?
I mean with all due respect all you keep doing is copy pasting articles that in reality are never going to come into law

Are you trolling or scaremongering.
Even the Middle East, Malaysia etc it's not an issue for these things because of the tourism.

You really think Bali is suddenly going to enforce "married couple only" visiting.
It's not a Sandals resort

Perhaps you should move to America the land of the free if you dislike Indonesia so much?
A place where black people can hardly vote
Gay people can't get married
Abortions are illegal
There's not even clean drinking water

You get shot at school. Or the mall. Or McDonalds.
Enjoy!
Never say never. Do you have a crystal ball ???
Indonesia is not just Bali.
Everything that will happen in the future will need to come closer first before they become a reality.
"Black people can hardly vote in the US ???"
Is this serious ?? This is an insult to US government. What about Barrack Obama, Martin Luther King, Condoleezza Rice, Colin Power, Michael X. Garrett and there are a lot more to name.
If you have evidence of this, there are a lot of newspapers, Broadcasters will want to pay you to see your evidence.

Err...not to be an apologist for the United States, which was always flawed and in recent years has become terrible in so many ways, but your claims are appallingly inaccurate.

- Republican legislative actions promoting gerrymandering, restricting early voting, and the like are certainly aimed at discouraging Black voters. However, Black citizens certainly can and do vote. AND they run for office. What is one of the few things that Raphael Warnock and Hershel Walker have in common? Hmm, let me think ....

- Gay marriage has been legal for quite some time in the US, and in fact, the US Senate just passed a bill, with bipartisan support, to keep it that way (protecting this right from possible interference from a conservative Supreme Court). There is no question that gay marriage is here to stay, and polls show widespread support for it.

- Abortion law has been tossed to the states. It is NOT illegal at the federal level, although there are those who would like to make it so. Some progressive states, like my own (Hawai'i), are doing everything possible to guarantee abortion rights in their state constitutions, and welcome refugees from other states. In addition, it is pretty clear that Biden is going to attempt to get legislation passed protecting abortion rights at the federal level, though I'm skeptical he'll succeed. However, polls consistently show that a majority of American citizens support abortion rights.

- Flint, Michigan and a few other places may not have clean drinking water, but most places do.

Honestly, if you want to criticize the US, there are plenty of true facts you can present that show it in a bad light. Trump. Elon Musk. January 6. Mass shootings. Obesity. Economic inequality. Crumbling infrastructure. Low-quality public education in many communities. That's just off the top of my head - there's plenty more to be said.

You don't have to make stuff up.

Alternative facts lol
My point was just curious as to why this new member seems to have such an anti-Indonesia mood?
Never seems to have anything positive to say?
Just cut and paste negative news stories and rumours.
We had a member like that before who got banned
Van Halen or something?

Argh I lost my post trying to edit

I was generalizing obviously tongue in cheek on some bits
Indonesia isn't that bad and you shouldn't be afraid of visiting if you want to share a room etc

Ok you can still see my post I think? Where people have quoted it

Perils of being online half asleep at 4.30a.m lol

What make you think I am an anti Indonesian move ? And anyway, you are free to agree and disagree. This thread is about what is in the news, isn't it ??

Ehmm,I speak high about the BPJS initiative in Indonesia. I praise the current government to want to reveal to let the public know about what happen in Indonesian police. Never seems to have anything positive to say ??

I do not know who this guy is.

UK sensasionalists rags.....same level as some Aussie rags.

It's all about headlines.

BTW, in Vietnam is was the same till a few years ago. Non married could not stay in the same room. Nowadays I dont think it is still enforced.
The (expensive) way around was booking 2 rooms, and using only one ....

You should get your facts straight. Cohabitation in Vietnam is legal since the year 2000.

And Reuters should be a serious source of news,

@pantaiema
I think that you are missing the bigger picture and focusing on a single issue, The whole package coming is in the form of a completely new (not change or amendment) of the Criminal Code.

The present Criminal Law is from 1918, so the change of this kind is a once-in-a-century event, considering the slow work of the Indonesian legislation and reaching a consensus.

So the country's ruling elites have reached a consensus to consolidate their power, and impose controls over the society, to the detriment of human and civil rights. The new Criminal Code does just that, criminalizing offenses to the government in the widest sense, right to protest, reducing penalties for corruption, and some morality clauses such as the prohibition of cohabitation, ban on selling any contraceptive devices sto minors etc.

In the prohibition of cohabitation the ones who can report you are your parents or your own children, no matter that the "perpetrators" could be fully consenting adults. This will create a situation of widespread intergenerational societal control, where kids can report fathers/mothers, fathers/mothers can report their kids, etc for the whole lifetime.

This change does not come in form of some government regulation that can easily be reversed, but in a form of a law change that is sending the country back to the factory "New Order" settings. Last time in 2019, the law was removed from the parliament session only because of serious backlash and demonstrations with death casualties, the one that is now missing.

And Reuters should be a serious source of news,
I lived there in 2008 / 2009 for 18 months.
I DO have my facts straight !

Reuters is a press agency, not a paper.

You said a few years ago and now is 14-15 years ago.

Vietnam decriminalized gay marriage in 2015.

Reuters is the source of news, with news reporters. The original article is from Reuters.

Abit confused as to why we have multiple threads on exactly the same thing.

Regarding this subject again; It is completely irrational and will NEVER happen. If your so damn worried about it, I suggest you search for condos in pattaya, Thailand ?

You must be one of these guys who like the good old times when Pak Harto was in charge, foreigners respected, and locals kept in check and followed what has been ordered to them.

I’m not sure how that is relevant to this subject. It is locals and particularly local university students who would protest the most. It wouldn’t even come to that anyway, business wouldn’t allow it.

However, thank you the assumption regarding the “good old days” I’m 35 and married to a local. Have no fear, I keep her in check.

In the past I posted this thread

So a little more than 1 month ago. Not exactly that long ago. or that far in the past.

Can't really see this happening unless it is in certain areas of the country. On top of that, a number of different ministries would have to approve it before going to the president. Also, don't believe everything the media says. The only quotes I see are coming from a guy whose background is criminal law and is a deputy minister. Plus only selected groups can 'report' it. even if it were somehow to pass.

I was gonna just not comment, even though my pet topic was brought up twice in the other thread about the same issue. Starting to feel like it has moved into offensive territory and needs to be toned down. Feeling pretty confident the mods will merge the two threads. Anyway.

Our Indonesian hosts aren't in danger of "going back to the stone age", as you put it. They're largely a sane and rational people like anyone else. I don't know what your nationality is (?) and whether or not you're WNI or WNA. Maybe it doesn't really matter.

What I can tell you, and what the people who have been in Indonesia for decades longer than myself can tell you, is that waves of religious fervor come and go there. Religious identity and attending policing of morality crop up from time to time as a means to appear to be doing something. It's a distraction from Indonesia's more intractable problems. Such legislation would certainly be welcome in my neck of the woods where hotels already ask for buku nikah, but it isn't going to fly in other regions. And that's OK, and is as best as I can tell how it has always worked in Indonesia.
