That's SOP. Indonesia's seized several ships for the same thing. This one happened to be Iranian.

The ship was shady as hell. It didn’t fly a flag and refused to answer all communications. Indonesian Navy had no choice but to catch them. The Navy must have been happy to let Malaysia handle the other ship.

This is the price they pay for being cheap and sloppy. They could have done it in international waters outside Indonesian EEZ, but they didn’t want to go that far.

It’s still not allowed, but the Indonesian Navy would probably not give a damn if it’s outside the EEZ.
