Indonesia & Corruption: a few articles in the past few weeks

Keep in mind the current corruption in Indonesia has been rooted in the Indonesian society and might have become a subculture since the President Suharto ruling.

During Suharto's Regime, Indonesia was either the most corrupt country in the world (No1) or among the 10 most corrupt countries in the world. It is probably quite a surprise for those who do not know Suharto's regime to know that the most corrupt countries in the wold at that time was not an African Country but Indonesia.

Keep in mind the current president and executive is only one in the system there are still other two e.g Legislative, and Judicial system which are the same level with president / executive. It has been revealed in the history that many of the largest corruption cases are protected to some degrees by these Legislative, and Judicial system as well as part of executive.

The current government is not perfect, but at least they have revealed, tried and put people in jailed more than any other Indonesian government and presidents all COMBINED. We have seen all of that is possible due to more freedom in press, the formation of anti corruption NGOs, the emerging of civil society.

The presidential candidate PS is part of Suharto regime, and it is suspected that many of his wealth his brother wealth is benefiting from the system within Suharto's inner cycle. GP has not emerged in the corruption case but he has very few track records in combating corruption. Let see what will happen after the current president step down.

Corruption and Religious radicalisms, extremisms are the main problems for Indonesia.

Ja, the Suharto clan seems to be untouchable from what I've read. Amazing.

My uneducated guess is that the news reports are a part of efforts by overseas interests to show concern about the "investment climate" post-Jokowi.

Or they could reflect the feelings of elements within Indonesia who are concerned about the return of graft and corruption.

Or both. :unsure::sneaky:

Sentencing high ranking police for crimes is a great way to show that Indo is serious:

Former Indonesian Police General sentenced to life imprisonment for drug trafficking

As we said before, it seems to be a standard path in history; a region is decolonized, becomes a country, gets a (military) dictatorship with corruption and nepotism and slowly crawls out of that pit.

Now of course the corruption has been present for centuries. Long before any colonization, indigenous principalities also took advantage of their subjects. After the VOC period, under the Dutch rule, the system called ‘cultuurstelsel’ made the colonist and the local aristocracy (!) and government officials quite some money as well. After the system was dissolved, there were other ‘solutions’ to self enrich.

Interesting to read is of course Multatuli’s (alias) book Max Havelaar* that appeared in 1860. And 40 years later the writer Ferdinand Wigger wrote about the huge problems with corruption in the Dutch East Indies society.

*This is the movie they made in the seventies:

Anything done now will be reversed by the new president.

I expect there to be corruption in any society, but not so open where everyone knows it is happening, but nothing is done.

Have you paid attention lately to how the US Congress and a lot of state legislatures operate?

You mean by being a bunch of self interest blaming the other party for everything and then try to say they are the good guys while fuck all gets done and everything goes to shit? Nope.

I mean the blatant corruption which is never addressed.
So there's another place.

What I find fascinating is the Polisi Mr Teddy

Guilty of drug dealing etc etc etc life sentence blah blah

He is going to appeal

His lawyer? Hotman !!
I mean I heard he is very very very expensive and that is why he is "successful" cough cough

Certainly not who I would hire to rep me on a life sentence - a guy with a funky shiny disco suit and rings like Thanos

So - how can Teddy afford such a lawyer ?

and why would Hotpants Puncak take such a case? Isn't he more celeb stuff - not a serious case with a General already found guilty and getting life sentence when the evidence is so overwhelming

A serious challenge for these famous (celebrity) lawyers is to decide which cases to take. You need to be able to win some, get enough visibility in the press and always weigh if you get enough public support if you defend a bad guy. My wife knows the advocaat Vermassen rather well and it’s quite interesting to see there is a whole ‘science’ (and intake team) behind it.

Hotman Paris does have a bit of experience already in the drug scene, he was part of Schapelle Corby's legal team quite some time ago. He is also well acquainted with -for lack of a better word- people who like coke and wear $200K watches. So there Teddy fits in rather well. He’s investing quite a bit in Bali now.

Well I saw HMP in PI coffee bean couple of weeks ago alone except for some 18 year old secretary with him. The staff asked for pics and he seemed disappointed when I ignored him hahahaha

Indonesia at least has a more democratic form of corruption. Just about anybody with a government job can be corrupt. Compare that to the west where only those in high positions can be corrupt. Take the last financial crisis caused by greedy bankers, not one of them was held accountable. Corruption in the west is on a scale that Indonesia can only dream of.

Hmm, did you read about the InBev driver? Suddenly water came out of the tap in cafes and at events. Even in the United States, parties were suddenly shut down because there was water in the beer kegs. For months, an AB InBev driver and a booze dealer from Belgium pumped the Jupiler and Stella out of thousands of barrels and then pumped water into them. The two did it rather ingeniously.

One of the areas in the west where most corruption takes place is the tender of new roads and repair of the asphalt of existing streets. The low and middle level government officials make some nice deals with contractors who deliver inferior work. Very high quality roads compared to Lampung of course, but still…

Not really. It's there in the West as you noted but the same is in other places too.

Corruption is everywhere. West, East, North, South, Hell, Heaven. But matter is the intensity, the scale of it and the ways it is measured. One of the most recognisable way of measuring corruption is the CPI (Corruption Perception Index)
Certainly, no scale, Index measurement, tool is perfect. There are always drawbacks, critics. But people just need to use the best available tools.

The current Indonesian government and executive can not do a lot of things if the law enforcers (e.g police), parliament have stake in it, and thus have interest to protect their own interests. But what people might notice here is that there is now more freedom in press, the emerging of anti corruption NGOs, the emerging of civil society in Indonesian society. Due to this many of mega corruption cases have been revealed. This include the corruption among Indonesian Police.

I personally believe Indonesia will miss the incumbent president due to restriction in the constitution. The constitution was changed due to disgraceful Indonesian ex-president Mr Suharto abusing the constitution. He were kept re-elected using the unknown way. It was only a single candidate to choose for each general election. That begs the question at that time what was the general election for ?

Did people notice many of of his family, inner cycle were making money through monopoly, using facility, hostile take over within the country in Indonesia. Very few of these people (if any) are making money by doing business overseas, competing internationally.
