How Indonesian resort island Bali became a refuge for Ukrainians and Russians

wear a helmet
There’s a video going viral in which an Australian lady gets into a screaming match with some policemen. Her argument: “I’ve been here for 23 years already and never wore a helmet!”

Now like all the other cases, people are closely looking into the internet presence of the person and it seems she rents out ‘her‘ house without being married to a local. Now some are raising the question how that is possible while staying under the radar from the tax, manpower and immigration authorities.

One ‘little’ thing can get you into trouble now. Esp. since there’s practically no privacy; all your information as full name etc. is published together with the videos.

edit: posted at the same time as @snpark

I like this one. Way to keep digging!! 23 years?? Wow. Could be an interesting visa status here

There are many examples (video's) like this in the USA. They have a name for (racist) women like her: " Karen". Google that. In this case also. What is she thinking shouting like that to the police? She obviously thinks low of Indonesian police officers and indonesians in general.

We have Karen here

Even the famous Karen restaurant opened recently in Jakarta where the staff are rude to you
Of course some Indonesian didn't understand the concept

There is a massive difference between do not know and disagree ...with someone else assertion.

Okay sport, how about you look at Soviet Russia from 1917 until 1991 and tell me they are still the good guys like you claim they are. Next look to see if people were volunteering for the army by choice. Here is a hint, they weren't and were threatened and were shot if they didn't comply. Then research the political views of the people you had mentioned.

Are you a well known historian, scientists? Have you done the research by your own making such a strong claim such as other people DO NOT KNOW just because they disagree with you. Please let us know your publications in Historical well known scientific journals ?? Not a low quality chit chat from the people who have the same political views with yours. Any links ??? There are a lot of such kind of people on internet making such a strong claim and asking other people to just believe them.

The thread is about refuge and know turn to become a political debate comparing Russians with Nazi, where in fact Russian are the key force that defeat Nazi. There are a lot of Russian Jews running from Nazi during Hitler/Nazi era.

1. Studied history and talked to those who lived tduring that time period.

2. Have mates from Russia including those who grew up in the Soviet era. One of them had their dad disappear between 1992-1994(forget the exact year) and his passport was sent to them from Siberia. No they never found their father or exactly where he was sent. This was common especially when Stalin was in charge.

3, Went to Russia in 1991 right after the fall of the Soviet Union. Saw things with my own eyes.

4. The Russian winter is what really defeated Hitler.

5. Saw the Russian ruble take a massive nose dive in the 1990s.

I would hardly call the Russians living here refugees. There are cheaper options to avoid being drafted.

Did Russia help with WW2? Yes, but they are not the heroes you claim they are.

What a claim even adding various key points.
Studied history ? Oh Well, there are a lot of people study social science, finishing their studies they ended up stacking item on the shelves of the supermarket chains. There are people who are studying economy, finance, finishing their studies they become benefit scroungers, keep losing money in the stock market, fall into the Ponzi pyramid scheme. Many well known Computer coders, programmers do not even study computer science.

The thread is initially about refuge and now a few people try to bring their political views.

Just to make it clear I never say that those Russians in Bali are bad or good people. Good/Bad people are everywhere. What about other nationalities getting caught smuggling drugs to Bali Indonesia? I disagree with sweeping generalisation of Russians people, let alone comparing them with Nazi. The people who single out other people just because of their nationalities, ethnicities are racists.

Oops.

Syrian and Ukrainian Foreigners Pay Rp 15-31 Million to Make Indonesian ID Cards

They got nice local names: The Syrian became Agung Nizar Santoso and the Ukrainian was named Alexander Nur Rudi.

Now I don’t know exactly what the word agen here means. If it is an official agent who found a way to get real KTP’s obviously some people in the CatSip are complicit.

Yes, those Russians have passports, so one can assume they are well-to-do Russians. They cause the same problems as the Russians in Georgie, to which country also 60.000 or more Russians fled.

Nor should every German 80 years ago be called a Nazi. But there are clear parallels between the past Hitler government and aggressions and current Putin government and aggressions. Every Russian who supports the current government is just as bad as every German who supported the Nazis.

This is another news what various nationalities are doing in Bali. Foreigners in Bali work illegally and some are even selling vegetables. Official iNews Mar 9, 2023

It is in Indonesian but people could turn on the Subtitle, and Auto Translate into English.

Because of the many irregular activities of Russians and Ukrainians it seems the Governor of Bali has said no more VOAs to be given to these nationals. Not sure what the follow up will mean for the many thousands of Russians and Ukrainians already in Bali.

@harryopal does a Governor have the authority to do that? I don't think so.

He doesn't. The governor is just making a request to the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, which oversee the Directorate General of Immigration. There are more considerations about a nation's visa policy beyond some rowdy tourists on a resort island, so this request is by no means certain to be fulfilled.

Naughty tourists? Also not very smart to use an euphemism for violators of the law.
