Indonesia opposition leader cries out hours before arrest

Hasto’s arrest has sent shockwaves across Indonesia’s politics, raising concerns of a new slide toward authoritarianism in a nation still haunted by decades of heavy-handed rule.

The move is a sharp escalation in the complex three-way struggle between President Prabowo Subianto, former President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and ex-President Megawati Sukarnoputri, who leads the PDI-P and is the daughter of independence hero Sukarno.

The Asia Times report is especially interesting in that it is Hong Kong owned and now with the CPP carefully controlling media in Hong Kong and all of China I wonder what kind of insight this story might suggest regarding China's political intentions there are for Indonesia. China already has investments and other interests here so I doubt that it would wish to be inflammatory in reporting Indonesian news.

PDI-P is the only party that has refused to join Prabowo's coalition and remain an opposition party. This arrest is political for Prabowo to say join or else. Megawati, nthe parties head still has a lot of power in Indonesia and if this comes down to a fight you may find a number of parties abandoning the coalition and Prabowo getting in more hot water than he expected.

With the new announcement of the new Wealth Fund and the reducing if the budget, people are going to start getting louder in opposition.

The CCP always has a vested interest in showing how other countries struggle, which is a tacit way of showing how superior their own version of "totalitarian surveillance state with Chinese characteristics" is.

Megawati makes power gamble with party leaders’ pullback from Indonesian President Prabowo’s retreat

Hours after her trusted aide’s arrest in a bribery case on Feb 20, Ms Megawati Soekarnoputri, chairwoman of Indonesia’s largest political party, ordered regional heads from her party to “postpone” attending a leaders retreat by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

The newly inaugurated representatives from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) were told to delay their travel to the retreat, and, for those on their way, to stop and wait for further instructions from the party chair.

The party was “monitoring the evolving dynamics of national politics following the legal criminalisation of PDI-P secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto” by the Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), they were told.

Pulling back in order to weaken Prabowo might only serve to strengthen Jokowi, which is something that Megawati must understand.

I understand it from here:

"KPK named Hasto as a suspect in two cases. First, an alleged bribery related to the interim replacement of Harun Masiku as a legislative member in the 2019-2024 House of Representatives. Second, an alleged obstruction of the investigation into the case."

Certainly all corruption, bribery case, crime needs investigation but if the resources are limited there should be any prioritisation. If the goal is purely to combat corruption rather than pursue political motives, the focus should be on mega corruption rather than minor offences like petty bribery like in this case.

Recently, only a few major corruption cases have come to light, such as those involving Pertamina, PIK, the sea fence land grab, and Timah. However, in these cases, only the lower-level perpetrators have been arrested or jailed, while the key players remain free to continue their illicit activities.

Not to mention, there may be a need to reassess the judges in the Supreme Court, the highest legal authority. There is no point in spending countless hours, resources to investigating a case if, in the end, Supreme Court judges can be bribed to influence the verdict.

Hasto’s arrest seems like it could lead to even more tension between Prabowo, Jokowi, and Megawati. The worry about slipping back into an authoritarian government is real, especially with how the power struggle is playing out. It’s a pretty intense time for the country.
