Going to College

What does it take for a foreigner to go to college there. I'm interested in the Institute of Arts in Jakarta and I guess I'm wondering what would be good to get before we travel so I could be ready to apply.

Are you reasonably fluent in Indonesian?

I don't see anything specific about an application process on the Institut Kesenian Jakarta website but they do invite questions about everything, including "pengakukan atas sebelum belajar," on their contact page, so your best bet would be to contact them directly.

I am not fluent, but am currently in classes and also have until January before I would be going, as we will arrive too late to be a part of the final wave for the year. They said to get a letter from the consulate where you live, so I am going to try that. Just trying currently to stuff as much Bahasa as possible in my brain.

Check if there is a difference in tuition. For most schools that accept foreigners or have an international program, it is a higher cost tuition. I would appreciate to know if they charge more. There is probably not much written about accepting foreign students, because there are so few in Indonesia. Typically, there are less than 6000 for the country. More than half are from Malaysia and Timor Leste, so they can passably speak Indonesian. Almost 1/3 of foreign students are enrolled as the Indonesian language as the field of study. Likely less than 1000 foreigners from non neighbor countries attend non language programs of study. Not enough demand to write entrance criteria for.

My advisor, who also works in southeast Asian studies and spends a lot of time in Jakarta said that in the worst case, I'll probably be able to do everything once I'm there since I'll have 4 or 5 months before I would be able to attend. I may just go in person and talk to them with my husband. Hoping that from now til then I'll have at least ok Bahasa.
