As I daresay most of you are aware, fish farming, and in particular salmon farming, has been notable for producers seeking to maximise profit by over stocking and adding antibiotics, chemicals and other hazardous foodstuffs to promote rapid growth. As a result many farms have fish riddled with lice and poor health making them toxic rather than being a healthy food yet still making claims with salmon as it being "wild salmon." Pale insipid fish flesh has colour added to offer a deceptively lovely pink suggesting freshness.

Reported today that Scottish salmon farmers are now not required to mark their produce as "farmed" salmon. This despite in 2023, an unprecedented 17.4m salmon dying on farms before harvesting, exceeding 2022’s 17.2m.

Ahh well, we all die sooner or later..... but perhaps a bit sooner with modern food production techniques.

Speaking of salmon, many years ago I did a chit chat with one of our factory workers. He mentioned buying salmon for his child, and I asked why salmon, and he said because it will make kids smart. I told him any fish will do the same. Salmon was imported and expensive back then, especially for him. It was a totally unnecessary expense.

I like the taste of Salmon now. Before tuna, and Mahi Mahi. I miss the delicious tender cuts of steak from America. Pork there is much cheaper than in this country. The chicken there and here is pumped with growth hormones. Unfortunately, because there are so many people on the planet, all food is being mass produced on farms, in giant cages, pens in the Ocean. Due to these tight living quarters, the poor animals, fruits, and vegetables, are prone to disease and infection, which leads to pumping them full of chemicals, and antibiotics.
The only way to avoid this is to live on the land, and grow your own. But the feed you buy for your animals could be grown with lots of crap in it, without people even knowing. Guess this is the way of the world now. What to do? 🤷🏼‍♂️🤪🥦🌽🧅🧄🍆🥕🥔🐥🦆🥩🌶️🦃🐓🦐🦞🐟🦀🦑🐝🪿🐷

"What to do?"Ask Elon Musk if you can be on the first space ship to Mars.

No thanks on the offer to go with Elon. I think I will just stick it out here, and grow as much of my own food as possible.

News today about some more salmon for the menu. This latest pollution must leave consumers wondering about the health of the fish coming from this Tasmanian salmon farm.

This is a just another example of the problem we face today. Due to the Over population of people. There has to be Mega farms producing the food, to provide enough food. Animals, Vegetables, and Fruit were not meant to be clustered together in such massive quantities. ( Cities Included) When this takes place, it becomes unhealthy conditions, which leads to Dis-ease! Get it (Not at Ease)! When an organism such as animals, vegetables, fruits, Humans! Becomes sick, the disease they have, can spread easily by Air, touch, water, food, etc.
And since everything is being mass produced on mega farms. The sickness spreads rapidly to all the Organisms! Now we have Antibiotics to stop the sickness. The Farmers, Growers, Producers, Parents, give the Animals, Vegetables,Children, Antibiotics to stop the sickness. Which unfortunately probably stays in the organisms we consume and raise. I don't mean consume the Children, but the antibiotics consumed stay in their bodies when they are given or eat Animals, or Produce.
It's interesting how We have adapted to consuming these things, Plastics, Antibiotics, Radioactive particles. And still Survive, and some Thrive.
This could be the cause of so many Dis-eases today. 🤷🏼‍♂️🤪🙀🙉🙈🙊

A follow up to the earlier post about problems with salmon farming in

What a drag! I like to eat Salmon too! The guy was right when he said, If this was a land based farm and the public could see thousands of dead animals, Especially if they were Cows! People would be Grossed Out! I Agree!

Latest on the salmon farming issue in Tasmania, Aus. 5,500 tons of dead salmon have been dumped as waste. If the farming conditions were killing the fish I can't help but wonder at the health implications for people eating farmed salmon.

Such a sad state of affairs. Now in the US, due to the Avian flu virus (bird flu) they are having to cull millions of industrial farm raised Chickens. The Government is trying to keep a lid on this, but the word is already out. What is even worse, there are reports this Virus has spread to wild Bird species also. Plus maybe even Cattle. There is a huge scare it could even mutate into a strain that Humans could contract!
It's interesting that this has come just as President Trump had knowing Lied to the American Public during his campaign, that he was going to lower the cost of Groceries! Well his promise has gone down the drain, and Now the price of Eggs is reaching 1 dollar an Egg!
I wonder if this New Virus is just another scare tactic to spread World wide Fear like the Corona Virus! Why would Governments want this, I don't know?
But back to the Salmon problem. Unfortunately, due to the huge Population growth of People, All food grown now, is at an Industrial level! Farmers know, that if you grow, or raise, too many of the same strain, or species and contain it in one area, then the Species, or Strain, of food is prone to Dis-Ease! So at this time, the solution is mass culling, and injecting mass amounts of Antibiotics into the food supply, to try to control future Outbreaks!
So it seems to me that we have to Diversify our crops, and Animal farms, to prevent these types of Outbreaks from happening! Remember the Great Depression. All of this happened when the Stock Markets crashed in the 30's, and the Small Farmers who had been convinced to use Petrochemical fertilizers, which killed the soil, and The Great Dust Bowl came, and the land dried up and their crops all died, so they couldn't pay back loans to the Banks, which in turn, repossessed the land, and then Rich Conglomerates, bought all the land for cheap, then started all the huge Mono cropping Farms! Still being Farmed in the same way today, using Petrochemicals, and growing food that is not Nutritious. Which leads to Unhealthy People! So we get pumped full of Antibiotics!
I'm getting confused, so I'll stop writing, but I think you catch the drift of what I am getting at. The only solution which comes to my mind is, As many of us as possible, go back to being Small Farmers, or live in Smaller communities, with other Small Farmers, where we can go back to raising Organic food on a diversified level! 🤷🏼‍♂️👍🌏🐣🐖🐑🐄🐓🥦🍎🥬🥕🍇🍓🍑🍅🍆

You and your, let's put chemicals anywhere we can to place blame on. I have a grand idea that I think many would agree with. Before you dream up some post to put your anti anything in it, look it up before posting. Do us all a favor.

As for the Depression and the Dust Bowl, chemicals had absolutely nothing to do with it. The actual man made cause was tractors. Tractors removing the native land top soil to plant primarily wheat and cattle. President Lincoln created the Homestead Act and anyone 18 years of age could lay claim to 160 acres of land and own it if they worked it for 5 years. WWI the demand was the greatest and when more and more land was cleared. 30 some million acres. Even the poorer lands for farming were being cleared then and the first to go when the environmental cause moved in. A great drought that dried up the lands and since the original topsoil was removed it turned to dust and during the Great Dust Storm blew all the way from it's source in the Plains States to the Atlantic Ocean where it covered everything in deep, orange, dust. Farm soil dust, not your typical household dust filling your corners or the dust bunnies under your bed.

Yes, there are farm conglomerates but it wasn't them who bought up the farms that had to be abandoned. Farm conglomerates are a much more recent thing. Farms were bought up by other farmers many times from the area government since they were abandoned. While yes, there are Farm Conglomerates today, there are still many independent farmers. Old family farms that have grown over the years. The only inlet for the conglomerates is that there are very few new farmers mainly because of the cost. That is why the old families are still in business.

Sorry mods.

Thanks for the correction! I knew some Genius Fish would come forward if I cast the Bait, and give us the real low down. But I bet ya a big fat Rupiah, that they're using petrochemical fertilizers!
Remember Tom Joad and his family, they heard about the Green Pastures of Plenty in California, and all they got was The Grapes of Wrath! I'll just have to curl up with my Dust Bunny and do more Research! 👍🙀🤪🍇🌾🌽🍆

This will be my last reply to you concerning this subject because you have taken this thread way off course. My reply is simply that I expected no less from a person living in a fictional mind than to reference a fictional story as evidence. Tom Joad and family were considered Okies in those days. Basically migrants seen as an invasion by the locals. Just like today in a sense. They mostly settled in the Salina Valley and in time those grapes became great wealth with green pastures. National Geographic has some good information on it and maybe watch Ken Burns documentary on the Dust Bowl.

Back on topic. I had beans and wienies with garlic chips and a Coke Zero to accompany it.

As I look back, I see you only focused on one part of my post. You completely ignored I was referring to the problem of Mega Farms, Mono Cropping, that Harryopal had brought up about the Salmon die off.
I thought about what you posted and thought wait a minute? Why would farmers remove the top soil? I can understand cutting down trees for more tillable area, to grow crops. Sure they cleared more and more land, but clearing land, just means cutting down forest, not removing top soil.
The only time I have ever heard of removing soil is when there has been a toxic spill, or a place that has been continually polluted, so the EPA declares it a Dead Zone and sends professional crews in to do the clean up. Or I've heard of Farmer's having to remove soil that has a build up of Salts. If you want, please post some proof of Farmers removing topsoil? I have been a Farmer and that is something a Farmer never does. If possible, Small Farmers add Compost, and Organic Fertilizers to slowly build up the soil over years! Yep, And I'm Proud to be an Okie from Muskogee! 🍇👍

I'm surprised this serious salmon farming problem is happening in Australia. Australia has generally strong regulations. Farmed salmon is known to be of inferior quality, but in Europe and US I've always found comfort buying it from healthy food stores that display some certification information like "raised responsibly/sustainably/etc"... probably wishful thinking. So if Australia and Scotland cannot keep their salmon farms under control, I wonder what kind of crap is in the salmon here in Indonesia... are we eating Salmon farmed locally, or from China and other regulation-lax countries? Never mind, I don't think I want to know the answer..... I want to keep eating it....😠

I read something on seafood imports and exports regarding Indonesia a few years ago and it seems a lot of their salmon comes from the US.

But still no way of knowing if the salmon you are buying here is farmed. It doesn't help when local governments, like the Tasmanian government, tells the salmon farmers they do not need to include the words "farmed salmon" on their packaged products.

I would think most of it is farmed...
