Expat teacher to work in Indonesia with a spouse sponsored kitap

There are plenty of people holding British passports that cannot speak good English. Also there are plenty of native English speakers from countries like Singapore, Malaysia, India, African countries and others. Anyone who has spoken English since birth and has it as their no 1 language should be classified as a native speaker.
In fact as discussed on other threads there are now quite a few Indonesian kids who speak English from birth, and don't speak much Indonesian. This trend has accelerated a lot over the last decade. In the future "Indonesian English" should become one of the major worldwide Englishes on a similar level to Irish English or Australian English.

It is certainly the case. This applies not only in England but also in other parts of the UK, the United States, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. This is especially true for immigrants who become citizens of these countries via naturalisation but haven't attended schools or universities where English is the medium of instruction.

I doubt it. It might not happen for a few generations to come. However, many countries will certainly emphasize English literacy as a critical factor for gaining new knowledge, implementing interventions, and adopting new technologies. Additionally, there is a natural tendency toward the popularity of social media

Maybe we should demand our rights to teach English as real English teachers. We have spouse kitap and apart from us, every spouse kitap holder's education is valid here but ours is not. Isn't it unfair?

I don't want to rain on your parade but there are no rights for a foreigner to work here. The government gives permission to who they choose. Just curious as to who you would even present this demand to?

Your "rights" to work on a KITAP? "Real" English teachers? A reality check may be in order.

If you're serious about teaching English in a professional setting, then perhaps a "real English teacher" would know where and to whom a CV should be sent?

I thought this forum was here to help people, not to get triggered by unrelated messages and not to discourage people by trying to lecture them with unnecessary sarcasm. Anyway, I appreciate those who really tried to help me. may lord be with you all.

As for others.... I have no words to utter.

I request/demand the admins to delete my entire thread (with my consent and upon my request). I learned that this is no place to share.

Following the deletion, I will delete my account too. once again thanks to all those who understand my concerns. - panteima, helpful herbert, ilovered, samoerai, mamang-dudul, fastpitch and hawk.

I hate to see someone go, especially a new user but that is your decision. I think the forum is helpful but there will always be disagreements in a group of people. Tough skin is needed practially everywhere now (even more so on the internet). Best of luck to you.

Not because I want to go. I do like this forum so much. But sometimes some users here... Not only here on other posts they are so annoyingly sarcastic. Not everyone is comfortable with it though. Maybe I should think about my decision one more time. Thank you for the encouragement hawk.

Like any forum, you pay some attention to those you get to trust and you just block those who always post nonsense. You just need to give it some time to figure it out but always keep in mind that some may talk nonsense in one topic, they are informative in another. It's a forum and this one is better than 99% of the others out there.

No Forum will offer you sanctuary from ridicule if the poster only expects others to agree with them or is just looking for sympathy concerning their problems. People on forums have different outlooks on things forming their opinions. They are written words. Easy to ignore.

Your choice to come or go.

I use the ignore function on the people who talk crap - simple and effective .

We do our best to be helpful, on the whole. Sometimes there are areas that no amount of advice can help with. Working in areas that have been made illegal being one of them.
Some of the laws in Indonesia are illogical to people from other countries - just as some laws in other countries are completely bonkers.
The best thing we can take from forums & group pages around the internet/social media is that we can get varied discussion, voice our opinions and hopefully negotiate our way through the quagmire with eyes a bit more wide open.
Getting offended and triggered by random voices in the ether is a personal choice, I just tend to assign these voices to the white noise that surrounds us. It isn't worth the hassle to let people get under your skin.
The one thing I can say that will help one fail very quickly in Indonesia is having a huge entitlement ego. If that is in one's MO, then it is best to work on it, stifle it, mask it and grease some wheels with sugar coated smiles.

Sharing / ventilating / complaining / expressing oneself... it's an online forum dude.

Just one more comment if I may respectfully suggest something: there are employment portals and teaching forums that professional educators use. Those sites would be much more suitable for your needs IMHO. You may find sympathetic readers and also references to the countless studies/articles published over the past few decades regarding "native" versus "non-native" speakers working as language teachers.

Best of luck to you in your teaching career.

Which portals and teaching forums? Just being curious.

I know there is an ESL forum for an ESL teaching around the world. This forum is also used by many english teachers. Typically they post and discuss an ESL teaching job including work permit requirement. They have Indonesia in their sub forum

Basing it on passports makes no sense. Imagine if a dual UK/Indo citizen chooses the UK passport at 21, then he can teach English. If he chooses Indonesian then he can't :ROFLMAO:
Oh yes, he can. I am an Indonesian citizen and I was an English teacher.

BUT! he will get local teachers' salary which is waaaaay lower than those "expats"

Good for a laugh some people asking if they can live on $640 a month and their apartment costs $400

We talking about European westerners here
Grown adults. "Qualified" teachers. Who want to move here (why) so bad that they are willing to take $640 a month to "teach"
Not forgetting that they will actually have to work as well. That's not $640 to sit on the beach and write a blog.
You have to work a lot of hours for that too. Prep. Marking. Weekends. Etc.

That's how desperate people are to come live in Indonesia. Crazy

One needs 2 teaching jobs at least, for the basics. One to pay the bills, like rent, electricity, water, internet, phone, public transportation and insurance. One to pay for your food and drinks.
Per month:
Rent: 8 juta (studio in Jakarta).
Electricity: 800.000
Water: 200.000
Internet: 600.000
Phone: 200.000
Transportation: 1 juta
Insurance: 150.000 (bpjs)
Food and drinks (groceries): 4 juta
Total: kira-kira 15 juta

Let's say around 1000 US dollars per month for basics.
But for a more luxury life style at least 1500 US dollars, I would say.

Worldwide the grinding wheels of commerce powered by avarice are in gear to squeeze more productivity for less money out of employees. More and more people squeezed into poverty. Many of the so called middle class are shocked to find themselves struggling to stay afloat. The teaching profession is one that had claimed a certain higher status but is now beset with anguish as more pressure and inadequate wages are failing to match inflation. It's a tough world unless you want to live ordinary lives as asserted by Harry and Meaghan as their reason for breaking away from the royal family to live in Canada. I see that they recently jetted off to Germany for the Invictus games and Meghan was said to be wearing a stunning, off the shoulder green dress with dress and jewellery for the occasion costing $400,000. Now that is a level of ordinary living unlikely to be matched the those peasants seeking teaching jobs.

8jt can get you a 2bed apartment in Rasuna Said or Sudirman Park
A decent westernised kos is only 4-5

There was a small 2bed in bellagio once for 8jt
