Waiting for VITAS to KITAS conversion means that my passport will not be in my possession...not having KITAS means that I cannot apply for SIM...

So, I plan to use my International Driver's License until KITAS is issued.

Do you foresee any problems with me NOT having my passport ? Would my ID card from current country of residence be sufficient to carry while driving?

makasih

I would presume you have a laminated photocopy of your passport? Or now would be a good idea
I have one credit card size with my passport copy one side and my vax cert on the other

Carry your home licence as well as the international licence should be adequate. I trust you photocopied your passport so having this copy with you as well probably won't be needed but handy just in case

In fact it has nothing to do with a driver license but with the fact you’re not supposed to be walking around in Indonesia without a valid stay permit on you, which in fact is in your passport.

So no biggie of course, everybody will understand if you say the passport is with Imigrasi and can show them a copy of the VITAS etc. Most tourists also leave their passport in the hotel.

Don‘t forget to always carry the original driver license with you, the international version has no validity as license by itself.

Sorry to bump this thread, but I'm curious about how others may have dealt with the ambiguity re: driving with an IDP.

I hold a valid Hong Kong license with Hong Kong issued IDP.

Indonesia is NOT listed on the UN Convention on Road Traffic . In other words, my IDP is NOT valid for driving within Indonesia since Indo is NOT a "Contracting State" with regards to the Convention on Road Traffic (Geneva, 19 September 1949).

As stated here , there is no suggestion that Indonesia ever considered itself party to this convention.

It seems to me that I should be prudent and just wait for KITAS activation, then follow with local SIM.

note: The Expat Indo site states that "... you can not drive with only the license from your home country, because Indonesia is not a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic." Surely that means that any IDP issued by home country is also not recognized?

Don’t overthink that. Also, Indonesia does provide international driving licenses itself. (Reciprocality?!) And a hot shot (the head of the Sub-Directorate for Driving Licenses) claimed the international Indonesian SIM is valid in the 95 countries that signed the Vienna convention.

Depending on where you are, it could perhaps be an issue. Definitely not in touristic areas. And there’s an extremely tiny chance it could come up in an accident. But I still need to meet the first police(wo)man or other organization who knows anything about a ratification so it’s a chance of one in a billion.

Obviously if you feel it‘s too risky and makes you personally insecure, don’t do it.

Whoa, that's quite a read!

So reading this ... Indonesia is not a signatory to the latest conventions, which means

  • Indonesians driving abroad with Indonesian license must get IDP, can't use Indonesian license (apart from countries with reciprocal agreements - not sure what those are - and ASEAN driving permits)
  • the regulation governing IDP use in Indonesia does not match the practice in other countries - it seems a foreign IDP can be used without the original domestic driving permit!

In just over six years I have only ever had to show my licence twice. Once the police officer just glanced at it. The second time the licence was not an issue. To avoid blocking traffic while waiting for a right hand turn I had moved forward of the stop line and just outside a police station. A few minutes but no fine.

Of course nobody will go to court over this, but the question is which is higher in the hierarchy and has priority; a signed international convention or a police regulation. 🥱

In Indonesia? The lowest level regulation 😅

Even local laws don't take effect until implementing regulations are in place
