Do you keep your IDs updated?

Hi everyone,

This is just something that comes to my mind every now and then. This summer Iam planning to renew my daughters passport at the German embassy. So while Iam at it I thought I'll just do what has to be done cause Iam not often in Jakarta.

How do you guys keep it with your IDs? Of course it is necessary to always have a valid passport but I only needed my German ID once, in 2019. I think it had something to do with my daughters birth certificate (at that time I didn't have a SKTT or KTP yet). I remember later for my KTP, KITAP or whatever nobody asked for it anymore. So yeah, it's already expired.
Is it advisable you keep it updated? Seems like it isn't necessary for anything anymore.

The only benefits I see:
  • the format is like a credit card, much easier to carry with you in your wallet instead of bringing your passport when traveling in Europe.
  • back-up ID that helps you a lot to get a new passport if you ever lose it.
  • It's a spare ID that can be used when renting cars, etc. and such document is required as deposit.

You can get a German ID at the Embassy. For Germans living abroad without residence in Germany, you will only have "no residence in Germany" written as place of living. They do not write "Jakarta" or "Denpasar" etc., hence no updates or reporting are needed if you move between two cities abroad. It's valid for 10 years. You pay a certain additional charge for getting it issued abroad.

If the previous passport was not issued by the embassy in Jakarta already, or your daughter lived in Germany, do bring your "Abmeldebescheinigung" as proof for living abroad. The German embassy is not allowed to issue any documents to German citizens that still have a residence in Germany.

Thanks for the informations. I think for the passport there won't be an issue. We dont have any residence in Germany anymore and have the "Abmeldebescheinigung".

Iam just not sure if I should make a new ID for myself or not. It's not about the money..I simply don't like embassy stuff haha and don't want unnecessary "trouble" if there is no real use in it. I also don't have any intention to return to Germany in the next 10-15 years..except for holiday. On the other side I might as well get it done when Iam at the embassy anyway.

Are you talking specifically German?

I mean all ID passports etc etc licences KITAS office ID etc should be renewed on time. In same cases it's the law. Mostly it's common sense.

What's the point in carrying an ID if it's out of date? Ok yes to show it is you / your face etc but if it's out of date then it's invalid anyway even just for showing at a building to get entry

Yes I mean specifically my German ID. That's why I would like to know how you guys keep it with the IDs of the country of your origin. It seems like there is no real use anymore for my German ID in Indonesia. And even in Germany carrying a german passport is enough.
Of course everything else like passport or any documents that really have a use for me here are still valid

Well I guess put a note on your calender "ID expires in 2 months" or something
How long do they last for? 1 year or 5
I wouldn't let it expire but every year when you go home just renew it then ?

I guess we are talking a bit past each other. Maybe let me ask like this. Did you ever need your ID in Indonesia?
I know that from the German side there isn't any problem cause you don't really need to have a valid ID if you live abroad permanently and have a valid passport.

I just try to think of any reason why any Indonesian institution or whoever would want to see my Gerrman ID. So far it never happened to me, except when I was new here and didn't have a Sktt/ktp yet.

The UK has no ID card system. Tried to introduce it about 10 years ago but everyone complained and the idea was dropped. If it had succeeded then Brexit might never have happened, because the problem with having no IDs is that it is difficult for the government to know who everyone is and whether they are in the country legally or not. On the positive side having no IDs is good for expats because you can just go back and pretend you never left, use the NHS etc.

I come from a country where there is no such thing as an ID card and it doesn't matter here, you just need your passport. You only need your german ID card if you will need it for anything German. Indo authorities won't ever ask for it - as they use your passport as your ID.

Which ID? Yes. I use my passport everytime I enter an office to get a visitor pass. Every time I make a transaction in the bank.
Any time the police ask for my ID
Every time I fly

There is no "ID" here for bule really. Not like Dubai for example which has Emirates ID system for all residents

Indonesia bule just use passport or a self made credit card laminate like me with my vaccine cert on the reverse

Obviously we do have a KTP OA here. So we definitely do have an ID and can do practically everything with it that a WNI can.

I always keep my European ID updated, for the purposes that @mas_dam describes. Also, you never know when you need to go back to your home country for an emergency like a funeral or so and I really don’t want to walk around there with a thick passport.

My US id was my drivers licence when in the US. That is long ecpired so my passport becomes my US ID. Locally, I have my SIM and KTP. Those two items along with a SKTT would meet the requirements locally. These are items all bule who are not just on tourist visas should have.

Passport-Always keep it updated

An id like a KTP or SKTT from outside of Indonesia, no I have never had one of those. Now I do have my TX drivers license which I have used as an id when my KITAS/KITAP were being renewed and my Indo ids are not with me.

It would be nice to have ID and driving license combined in the same card. That seems to be very complicated in most countries 🙄 Not coincidentally also under the responsibility of different ministries.

SIM/Indonesian driver license is in most occasions accepted as alternative to ID card/KTP/OA as well.
Besides for visitor passes in buildings, I used SIM for domestic flight check-ins, even when dealing with banks it was accepted a few years ago before NPWP became increasingly mandatory for banking.

We area about to move to a house opposite us around the corner. Do I need to change my Indon driver's licence and notify immigration? What is the procedure for address change with driving licence? Thanks!

Definitely recommend to notify immigration and update your house card and KTP to keep from possible trouble. I just did an address change but didn't update my drivers license.

Thanks for the response.

I would not only recommend to communicate the change of address to Immigration, @harryopal , it is a legal requirement!
Same for KTP and SIM but the latter could be done at the renewal. You can do it earlier at SatPas in Denpasar, take the new KTP and a copy of the SIM.
