Correct. I haven't read the revised law just responding to the broad criticism that the power of the KPK is being diluted. As you have read the revision please be kind enough to describe what the changes mean.

So the Ugandans deserved Idi Amin? The Indonesians deserved Suharto? At start up many governments look encouraging but then as power corrupts things can deteriorate spectacularly.

That is fine. But you fall in the same trap as those who dismiss the law by stating the KPK is systematically silenced.

I have included the before and after (revisions) in my earlier post.

Joseph de Maestre was talking about elected governments when he made that famous quote. So instead of dictators via coups, he was more talking about the Rodrigo Dutertes, Donald Trumps, Boris Johnsons and Jokowi's of the world.

Jokowi was hyped from the start. Of course you can ask yourself how much of himself and how much Megawati c.s. we've seen. Not a bad job on infrastructure though.

In Papua things are really getting out of hand btw. More than 30 dead but because of limited access (journalists) we don't know a lot.

I find it very hard to understand why Jokowi has not come out with a forthright statement on this issue of the KPK when his stature seems to have been based so much on his anti corruption drive.

It's like a time honored Indonesian tradition: you ascend on anti-corruption cred, then become part of the system, and fast forward a few years...more of the same.

Did you know that many of the current (well, current as of last week) DPR members, including 2 vice-speakers were student protesters in 1998? :D

The let's call them provocators don't get paid so much. I was surprised to see that one arrested only got 10.000 IDR for gasoline, while another was paid in crystal meth. And they got some uniform-like clothes to make them look like students.

There are quite some videos floating around showing the violence. Can't upload them here.

It seems Plaza Senayan is locked right now so people can't get out of there.

And hoopla. Suddenly no more news on demonstrations on the TV stations. Only inaugural sessions of DPR and DPD.

It seems Jokowi is finally coming around. After initially insisting that he will not issue a Perppu (Peraturan Presiden Pengganti Undang-Undang - Presidential Regulation Replacing a Law) to change the changes to the KPK law, he now says he is considering it.
Jokowi confirmed he will not issue a PERPPU. It seems it also has to do with (an eventual overlap with) a current lawsuit.

OMG. Just saw that La Nyalla Mahmud Mattalitti will be the new chairman of the DPD.

La Nyalla, a preman who was infamous in Surabaya's nightlife where he made his first money, who was active in the football association and in an ultra right paramilitary organization, was a corruption suspect and then fled to Singapore. When his visa expired, he was deported, arrested in Indonesia and sentenced. Then he appealed. Luckily his uncle Hatta was supreme judge. So he was acquitted. He has been supporting Prabowo but they were not friends anymore when he had to cough up money for campaigning.

Ah, did you see the sleeping guy in the DPR?

Lora Muzakki Fadil stated he was tired from traveling and a late arrival. But I wonder if that's really the reason since he stayed in one hotel room with his wife. Well, all three of them. (Isn't that forbidden for a government official btw?)

So. Demos or not, nothing changes.
