Title : In 5 Years, The Number Of The Indonesian Middle Class Dropped By 10 Million People
Rep: Muhammad Nursyamsi/ Red: Budi Raharjo , Aug 2024

The (Indonesian) Central Statistical Agency (BPS) presented the latest data on the number of middle classes in Indonesia ...

2019 : 57.33 million people (21.45%),
2021 : 53.83 million people (19.82%
2022 : 49.51 million people (18.06%)
2023 : 48.27 million people (17.44%)
2024 : 47.85 million people (17.13%)

“If we look at its contribution to GDP, the middle class and aspiring middle class or towards the middle class contributed 81.49 % to household consumption,” ...

  • middle class standard in 2019 : spending rate of Rp 1,488 million up to Rp 7,229 million per capita per month.
  • middle class standard in 2024 : spending is between Rp 2 million per capita per month to Rp 9.9 million per capita per month .

So 83% of the population has less than 2jt per month to spend each month??
Yes, I know many of them living next to me,
not according the standard of your life or even WHO
they don't corrupt
they dont steal or cheat others

and I can see they still have lovely smile

So 83% of the population has less than 2jt per month to spend each month??
The Missus son (30) has no qualification. He works as daily worker in the fields or construction jobs in a radius of 10 / 15 km from the village (Java) when work is available.
He is usually paid 75k / day. And doesn't have a job every day.
Plenty small people in Bali working for 2jt or less a month.

So 83% of the population has less than 2jt per month to spend each month??
I understood that around 81.5% of the Indonesian total household consumption is done by people spending up to Rp9.9 million/month (around US$625/month) .

I guess the official wage values are not the real income , this is probably the reason why the same BPS used (see post no.1 above) spending value instead of wage .

I heard of many cases where employees get free : lunch , and/or and/or accommodation , and/or car/motorcycle to use .

I understood that around 81.5% of the Indonesian total household consumption is done by people spending up to Rp9.9 million/month (around US$625/month) .

I can not stop chuckling while reading this.

And it contradicts this entirely with this statistics.

Sorry , I revised my post no.6 above , I suppose your post was due to my fault (I made a summary of the Article and made a mistake) .

Mainly I included the word "Average" at :
[...Minimum Average Net Wage (R, S, T, U sectors) : Rp1.99 million (US$126)
Maximum Average Net Wage (B sector) : Rp5.23 million/month (US$330)
...]

To clarify that neither the minimum wage is Rp1.99 million (unfortunately) , nor the maximum wage is Rp5.23 million .

Prabowo has just announced a doubling of teacher salaries. Great policy! Now he needs to change the curriculum to eliminate religion, and the country might be on the path of improvement.

Also improve the foreign language courses, and hire adults to clean the school grounds, and stop making the children do this for free.

Builds character and instills responsibility. Much less likely to make a mess when you have to clean it up. Standard procedure in Japan for years. Saving money on your budget is bonus as well. You can use that money for things that you couldn't afford otherwise.

Maybe should have spent that money or part of it to better educate the teachers first. Of course, that would mean better education for those that teach the teachers. Better to have an incentives program in place to further someone's education. Oh, and put in place a standard attendance rule since so many teachers seem to spend teaching hours away from actually teaching.

On improving schools/education which has to be done to improve living standards because traditionally the uneducated masses don't know enough to rise against exploitation as much as the educated:
I would love to see better libraries available- traditional & electronic.
I would love to see black mould eradicated from classrooms and many other things...

I think the vast majority of teachers do their very best for students despite their low pay- I am so glad to hear of their pay increase.
If I was president, I would make teacher's pay a minimum of 10 mil a month -on condition that they retrain in modern teaching methods.
On completion they get the pay rise and those that don't do well get a rise on a sliding scale from being fired to full rise lol.
I would get local businesses to sponsor libraries in schools and I would push so much harder to get kids to eat healthier food. Obviously none of the above are short term goals.

There are some incentive programmes in place to further educate teachers. If they complete certain courses and meet all the criteria they can get a pay rise of a few more peanuts.

That's just candy coating child abuse. It's also forced labor! Making them clean school grounds for free is just being cheap, and the money should go to adults, the kids parents for example.

Cleaning up their own mess, is not child labor. It's part of learning 'etika' which most of them lack. And while we are on the subject of education, why not a program or two for teaching all of them some manners.

Cleaning up their own mess, is not child labor ...
Unfortunately it looks like teachers don't teach that the students should not make the mess , because I see students throwing trash at : the entrance of my daughter's school , at the streets , inside the public busses , ... (my own 4 "adopted" children and their mother behave like that too even after I tried to correct them) .

Maybe the Government should implement a fine for throwing trash in public spaces , like Singapore does .

As you say, the problem is this what they learn from their parents and community.

It is not the teachers job to teach these children how to have basic manners, that is the parents job. the government doesn't pay the teacher enough. Also if a student doesn't learn basic spelling, writing, and mathematics, they should not be allowed to move upward to the next grade. Religion also should be banned in school. Instead since Bali depends on tourist, teach English instead. I've seen a boy in Padang Bai, that couldn't count to ten without using his fingers. He has been passed every year and last I saw, he was in the fourth grade.that is wrong, and the school, and teachers should be held responsible! If the parents didn't give the children food wrapped in plastic, then what mess could the students make?

Woaw, woaw...a giant program !

Manners ? Even in the West many parents have no clue...
On religion you are completely wrong. It is the basis, the cement of traditionnal societies.
Like it was in Europe 75 years ago...
But don't make a circus out of it like in the US !
