Credit card for foreigner

How did you get this? di you have to ask specifically for a debit card?

.
Ah yes, I forgot. It's a debit card with VISA.

So the shops etc. swipe in in their CC terminals but it will deduct instantly from the account.

Debit cards often don't have as much protection as a credit card. Personally, given problems with many Indonesian banks, I prefer an out of country bank that provides better customer service, and chargeback protection for stolen, or fraudulent charges.

Having a card with no foreign currency fees, and either cash back, or airline/hotel points can be a bonus, too.

If you do that, you transform your credit card in fact into a debit card.

Be that as it may, but if putting down a 1 year deposit is the easiest way to get a card issued in your name in this country, why not?

Simply take back the deposit after the 1 year is up and you should still be able to use the card, this time not a "debit" card anymore.

Small update for old(ish) thread:

Today applied for a Mandiri cc (I have KITAS, working visa, work for a local Indonesian company) and the procedure of the day was that they were asking an 80% deposit compared to credit limit (e.g. for 10jt limit you give 8jt deposit). I said "OK" and kept the limit low - but as said, if helps getting later other cc's why not - otherwise keep just using my debit card as usual. They said is requirement from BI etc. and didn't come as a surprise after reading the stories in forums.

Even with a credit card, other banks usually will still ask you for deposit also - because BI needs the money ;-)

Aaaaand back to reality: Mandiri just informed, that desk girl was not too familiar with expat issues, and the real amount of deposit is 130%. Oh bugger.

Most of them give around 80-90% of what you deposit, what does she mean by 130%, 130% deposit of what limit you want? so you want 100, must dep 130?

why not just say 75% of what you deposit (or whatever it is)

Indo always so complicated with numbers, like the b1g1 offer, or b2 g1, I said oh so 50% off, they said no, buy 1 get 1 free

or pay 2 for 3 or 3 for price of 2? why not buy2 get 1 free

Yes, If want e.g. 100jt "credit" limit, need to put 130jt in their closed account.

Yes, maybe she 1st meant that can get 80% credit limit of the deposit, but she said it out loud incorrectly (our Indonesian HR manager was with me, so it was not "lost in translation"). Well anyway saying it any way you like is just bonkers.

its about the same anyway, put 130jt get 100 limit or get 80% of what you deposit
130% dep / 80% limit roughly the same

Well if the 1st impression was that "pay 80jt and get 100jt limit" vs. corrected "pay 130jt and get 100jt limit" I'd say there is quite a difference.

I've just this afternoon made an application for a "credit card" with BCA. The reason being that if I use my Australian Visa or Mastercard the Australian banking system will really grab more of my money because of the dreadful exchange rates they give. However, to have a "credit" card here I must have a blocked deposit in my BCA account to make sure that there will be funds should I use the card. Not what I would call a "credit" card. It may take a month to process the application. But worldwide banks are forever seeking new ingenious ways to squeeze money out of their clients... or should I say victims.

The Royal Commission of enquiry into shonky Australian banking practices, such as charging the accounts of dead clients and charging for services which were never provided. The banks are now wringing their collective hands and saying how sorry they are..... and I guess they are sorry because some of them now are having to pay out hundreds of millions of dollars for their sins.

Bankers are only sorry when their fraudulent practices are exposed.

Harry, if you don’t care about the obvious consequences, you could have your wife ask for a kartu tambahan, an auxiliary card.

This is a facility for spouses, children etc. Your name will be on the card but it is one combined account. With a single monthly report. Normally they’d only ask for your passport besides the normal ID.

Indonesia will introduce its own credit card; Bank Indonesia (BI) will launch a physical government credit card through a soft launch this month, while the official launch is in May 2023.

The deputy governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) stated that according to the direction of president Jokowi, the domestic credit card does not use Mastercard or Visa as payment processing system.

So the system used is the Gerbang Pembayaran Nasional (National Payment Gateway - GPN) from Bank Indonesia. This payment transaction system that connects various banks is used for ATM and debit cards.

The remarkable thing is that one of the major drivers for using this system is to avoid a situation (as in Russia) where the payment systems can be disabled by foreign governments and companies.

It seems the card can also be used in Malaysia.

Interesting. So, one has to open a bank account number at the central bank Indonesia? This is one step closer to e-Rupiah. Awas, the government can track your steps: beli Hermes bag, Rolex watch, ..

Government can track you already. With increased digital paying solutions, and the refusal of many retailers to take cash, the citizen is easy prey.
