Cold cuts in Malang

then why not Bali ? Bali is not only Kuta, Sanur and Canggu. It's "quite" here; not far from my sawah; you'll find ibu-2 bathing at very clear irrigation water or small river. Not very quite if you expect totally noise free; I still can hear praying mantra from the banjar at 06:00, 12:00 and 18:00 everyday, more "noise" on special occasion which is almost everyday - actually very nice and really feel like in Bali. The only downside - 2 hours or could be more from the airport and grand lucky.

We live very "hemat" too, vegies from the garden and rice from our sawah.

That would be an option. It's on my short list with Yokyakarta too. Which area do you recommend in Bali? Quiet but also accessable, meaning not in the middle of no where.

I want to relocate.

Thinking to move to Malang (from Jakarta).

Any advice is welcome regarding quiet area to rent a rumah.

Would it be more "hemat" to live in Malang compared to Jakarta?
If you expect Veluwe National Park quietness, Malang is not the place anymore.
Batu gets crowded over years with amusement parks. I had an idea to live in a village in Lawang, but the traffic on the main road/Singosari is often a nightmare. There are some quiet places nearby the foot of Gunung Kawi of Arjuna. But either it's a bit remote from stores/restaurant or rather close to some factories.
Otherwise, normal city life is available. There are some perumahan, Puncak Tidar, Lembah Dieng, Ijen Nirwana, Araya.
May be a visit to see what you can/can't really get there before you decide? I'll write more if I remember something else useful. Good luck!

Thanks for the warning.

I will visit the 'perumahan' you mentioned. Someone also said Ijen Nirwana is worthwhile to check out.

At least the rent over there is much lower ... I can rent a huge house for even less than I pay now in Jakarta for a apartment. 😊

It is. That was the villa 1 year rental price pre pandemic in Bali. Before it went through the roof.

Many house and esp. ex hotels and bnb buildings in that area for sale. Dilapidated and not popular anymore… bit like in Puncak where people realize they never use their second home and it only costs them money.

So, one can rent a lot of houses in perumahan, Puncak Tidar, Lembah Dieng, Ijen Nirwanan Malang much cheaper now?

I am also checking prices in Yogyakarta ... very high rental prices. Don't know why?

Other perumahan: Riverside & Graha Kencana. These two are located more to the north part of Malang along with Araya. The other previous three are on the west.

I think water & electricity cost the same all over in Indonesia. Everyday food from market/supermarket in Malang & Jakarta cost almost the same. Food from restaurant probably is a bit cheaper in Malang, but Jakarta has more restaurant options.

I'm not familiar with property buying/rental price in Jakarta. I saw a house for rent in Ijen Nirwana, 144m², 90 mio/year. 2,5 years renting that house probably cost as much as buying it without mortgage.

The biggest cost would be the rent .. as always.
So, compared to Jakarta the rent should be lower if we would move out ..

I counted that as 90 mio per month for 2,5 years (36 months). Ok, no more replying in this forum while cooking. My mistake, sorry for that! I consider this price is normal, although I think you can still bargain it.

Is the high rent the only reason to take such a big step as to move far away?
I imagine somewhere in Jabotabek there must be nice houses for a reasonable price, Jaktim perhaps?

No, Jakarta is too crowded, too noisy and too much 'polusi' ...🚗🚗🚗🚗

I want (and I will) relocate to another part of Indonesia and I am in the process of orientation now.
Someone said I should look into Malang.
Yogyakarta is on my list too.

Less crowded is important, but also more 'decorum' or 'etiquette' would be nice.
What I am bothered by are the manners here in Jakarta, among other things, in the malls.
Parents in the restaurants who let their children run around, scream and climb on tables and banks. Also in the more expensive (fine dining) restaurants of Mulia Hotel, JW Marriot, Fairmont ...
Children eat for free in those restaurants ... I think it's a mistake ... children should eat there for 2x the price as they 'menganggu orang yang lain'. 😂

I like nature/hiking and the sea (snorkling), so Bali is an option, but way down the list as it is too crowded nowadays. Maybe another island could be an option? Like Labuan Bajo, but it is still very primitive over there (no malls, no golf courts, no go-cars etc.).
Maybe Batam, then? Or is it too crowded over there too?

I have relocated many times in my life. For me it's no big deal, but, yes indeed my wife is complaining, saying: "you are a 'nomad. You will never find a place to rest".

Quiet places are quiet because there are less people stay there. Less people stay there because there are lack of facilities. They go hand in hand.
Do you feel you are a nomad? Then may be it's not a bad idea to travel around Indonesia/the world until you find what you look for.

I am a 2 hour ferry trip or 30 minute flight from Jakarta if I ever need to go there. I have eliminated all but an embassy visit so I don't go there. Bandar Lampung is crowded in areas and not so much in others. I rent a now 5 year old home with 180m2 single floor. 3.5 bedroom,. 5 being an office now, 2 large bath, big covered carport where my wife can keep plants that do not fit in the yard and the bird Avery. We have no use for a car. Corner lot of 300m2. Rent is Rp25 juta per year and we pay 2 years at a time. Owner has never raised rent and contract is coming up and still no raise in price. Food is a lot cheaper here than Jakarta and we even have modern malls and supermarkets. A big lunch in a medium sized resto cost us around Rp31 to 35 rebu. High end you're looking at 55 to 75 rebu. Steaks depending on Aust or US are 150 to 350 rebu but hey, I buy locally from a meat suppler ans start up the grill for a quarter of that cost. And it's cut the size I want. We also have breathable air.

Why anyone would want to live in Jakarta, especially if they have a family is beyond me. I could rent a nice house here, put my family in it, rent a kos in Jakarta for workdays and visit the family on weekends for less than I would need to spend to live in Jakarta. Even diplomats from Embassies in Jakarta have families that live here.

From my understanding, Araya is the developer in that area, right? Just be cautious when taking in information from developers without verifying it. Typically, what they showcase in their publications such as amenities, access to the city center, and other promises, are often just plans meant to attract buyers. What happens after they have secured enough money can be a different story. While what they say might be true, it is essential to double-check and not rely solely on their publications, which are essentially advertisements. There have been plenty of cases like this in Indonesia before. You wouldn’t want your money to end up like those who invested in the "Meikarta" project, as mentioned here.

So true .. plans may change or even worse takes decades to realize.
