Hi all,
Where can I get cold cuts in Malang? I've tried Ranch Market in Malang but I didn't see it.
I saw some places that sell sourdough bread and/or ready to eat sandwich, but sometimes I just want to sit at home and made my own lunch.

I saw these in Transmart ... in the freezer section. Did you check the freezer section in Ranch Market?

Cold cuts? Are you speaking of a certain type of meat? I’ve always thought of sliced ham, sliced salami, bologna, etc. Pork versions mostly.

I just finished off a nice 3 pound package, of thick cut, Costco bacon brought from the US just over 2 weeks ago. Soooooo good. :)

I assume you’re looking for smoked ham and luncheon meat (boterham worst) etc?

Normally they should have the brand Aroma in the bigger supermarkets. Often in the deep freezer section. They also have non halal meat but obviously these are harder to find.

If you can’t find it, try via GrabMart or so, there you can also order Aroma products etc. And we even order via Shopee, there must be suppliers close by in Surabaya. Of course you need to be home for delivery,

Doesn't have to be too specific. Yes! Ham, salami, thin slice of roast bief.

Yes, I think I saw some frozen ham and sausage there. I expected ready-to-eat-meat cooling section but now I think it's just unavailable here. 😅

Thank you all for your reply and suggestion! 👍

Always close to the butcher. It depends; some supermarkets keep it frozen, others in the cooling section. But it’s the same product and ready to eat so you’d just have to defrost it.

We normally get just Aroma at our supermarket in Bandung. Pretty limited selection. Not bad, but nothing special, either.

Ah, ok. I thought they won't taste the same.

I asked my husband about this brand and apparently we have bought it several times long time ago. I completely forgot. Limited selection is always better than no option at all.

Thank you!

On tokopedia there are a couple of places in Malang selling pork ham

There is also lots of butchers which might have stock of beef ham and even a bernadi factory shop which should have some smoked beef and other beef products

Im surprised if ranch doesnt have at least frozen

There are 2 Ranch Market, I visited one in Jalan Semeru. I haven't tried the other one in Jalan Kawi. The last one was previously Giant and then Superindo and now Ranch Market.

Check Wadaku store on Tokopedia. I buy my whole hams from him when in stock but he always has sliced. Various sausages also. His hams come from Bali and they are not Aroma. Much better smoking than aroma has. You can find Aroma whole hams on Tokopedia also. Since there are companies in Bali that are smoking meats, maybe get a name off of a seller on line and contact them directly.

I don't trust the cold meat section of my local supermarket. They used to sell packs of deli ham- but I found out that they are delivered frozen & then are just left sat in the open fridge area until sold- so it is anyone's guess how long it is sat there after thawing.
So- I have a fall back plan of chicken salad sarnies for lunch- I buy fillet of chicken & poach it and then slice it. Not quite a ham or salami sandwich but still a change from salt & msg & oil coated food.

found this through instagram...

That's also my concern with frozen food in Indonesia.

I'm satisfied with pecel or other salad for lunch. I don't mind warm meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My husband loves home prepared shredded chicken than cold cuts. But sometimes he wants bread and salami and we certainly won't find them in nearby Indomaret. It's also practical if we have to catch up an appointment after lunch time - which happens a lot recently.

Btw, we tried ciabatta & baquette from Grain Alley in Malang. They are ok, but we can tell that they taste different than what we get in Europe. Of course, after a week roti tawar (and some effort to explain to family members that roti tawar "is not" bread 🤣), no complain has been made 😄. They also have other types of sourdough bread.

Check out Grandpas Store on Tokopedia. May be on Shopee too. Never checked.

I was just going to suggest Grandpas- I used to have their stuff delivered in Bandung- but I can't find it here now.
I like their products. Of course I need to have it sent next day but no problem. One of the few more European style bakeries here. Prices really are not that bad either.

I want to relocate.

Thinking to move to Malang (from Jakarta).

Any advice is welcome regarding quiet area to rent a rumah.

Would it be more "hemat" to live in Malang compared to Jakarta?

Malang itself not so interesting. The hills around it like Batu or Tretes are relatively cool. 🍎🍏
Not trendy anymore and rather cheap to buy & rent.

I don’t want to take a prop plane 🛬 to Bali though and Surabaya is not -although it seems like it- next door.
