I generally use my US credit cards that have no foreign fees, in Indonesia.
You can almost be guarnteed that if you try to make an semi-large authorized purchase with a US CC it will get flagged and take several phone calls to fix but fraudunlent transactions go through with flying colors. Different problem but seems unique to the US.US banking system is prehistoric compared even to Indonesia
Trying to get my clients to transfer money from US to Indonesia is a nightmare whereas I can sit with my phone and click a couple of buttons and send money to US in seconds
It's incredible how behind the US is with technology on some things
I know of a guy to used to sign his slips with "Istole Thiscard" just for giggles. Some people used "Donald Duck" or something similar. Never heard of any of them being called out. It is literally a joke there.what amazes me in the US is how you give them the card in a restaurant...they charge it, they return the card and then you write down a tip on a piece of paper.....and they can charge it again even without having the card. No pins, no even looking at the signature really. Also if they wanted they could charge any amount as a tip afterwards and youd have to check it and fight it later.
US banks seem to have determined that its less just to pay any customers who have fradulent claims than implementing even the most basic security procedures.
I have spot checked it over the years, and never saw a huge difference. No foreign surcharges, no “bill in USD” type scams, like some hotels try to get you to accept. Always pay in local currency.Hows the exchange rate? Id be amazed if you are not losing 3%+.
Yes indonesian banks are a nightmare when there are fraudulent charges but in my experience that has very rarely happened. US banks dont even have basic protection such as pins or 2 party authentification.
