With the online home schooling the last 4 months of the school year, I see how the Kindergarten kids are learning basic addition and subtraction. They are starting the kids out with this format:
4 + 5 = 9.
Then it is to be taught in 1st and 2nd grade the standard:
4
+ 5

Why would it be taught two different ways, the first being useless as everything in everyday life is added up in columns?
