Bali deports expats

Seems they got caught knowingly violating the limits of their authorities to work in Indonesia and were summarily deported. Not much to see here.

It’s a shame for local dive instructors who cannot get work
Is there really a shortage of work for "local dive instructors"? Are there a large number of out-of-work Balinese dive instructors who speak English fluently?

Just at the risk of being pedantic - how can Bali deport expats?

That would be like saying Lincolnshire deports expats/ Arizona deports expats/ Victoria deports expats.

Bali is just the li'l turd island popped out the back of Java's bum... Bali IS NOT A COUNTRY.

It seems that they were deported by order of the Singaraja office of Indonesia immigration and their deportation from Bali would in essence be a deportation from Indonesia. In any case, to a point in your post, from a cultural perspective Bali may as well be a different country from Java, and thank God for that.

I'm glad too - I suspect for very different reasons :)

Bali doesn't deport expats......Immigration Indonesia's office in Singaraja has the authority to deport.
Lincolnshire doesn't tax UK taxpayers.....HMRC office in Lincoln has the authority to tax. Do not know who can deport out of Lincolnshire except getting rid of foreign fishermen...but not sure that was done lawfully..
Arizona is a State within the USA and has State authority as well as Federal authority and sometimes it takes a Phd. to unravel the difference.
Victoria...which one... Australia, Canada or Africa?

Yes it is very different, which is a very good thing indeed - I would never have built a house in Java if it was the same as Bali!

Do you want to elaborate your post...otherwise it makes no sense.

I think it is splitting hairs, we all know they mean deported from the country, via Bali, you cannot be deported from that one island - they are just saying a) it happened in Bali b) they were deported so a+b = c) they were in Bali and deported from the country from Bali
Yes it is a little pedantic but I didn't start the argument hahaha

It makes perfect sense. He does not like Bali, and would not build a house there. He does like Java, and therefore has built a house to reside in Java. What part do you not understand ?

Well that's conclusive...I was somehow thinking "I would never have built a house in Java if it was the same as Bali!' meant he would never build a Balinese house in Java.
Thanks for clearing that up

Honestly, I think just some local dive instructions didn't get well with foreigners instructors and locals went to report about them to immigration. I don't say that people should violate local rules about working but at least they had the working permit just for other position and they were deported. How many foreigners works in Bali even without any working permit? So, in this case, you need to deal not only with bureaucracy to work legally in Indonesia but as well not make enemies with local people.

Thye one thing you do not want to do if working illegally in Indonesia is to piss off the people whose work you are stealing...

Over 2 decades ago I hung out a fair bit in Ubud, as an American friend of mine, a painter, was living there. (She moved back to the US when a housesitter burned her house down by falling asleep with candles lit on the steps.) She introduced me to a lot of expat denizens - at that time it seemed like virtually none of the foreigners working there had proper papers. I marveled at this and was told that in Bali it was quite normal, and immigration usually looked the other way. I suppose things have changed since the early 1990s, though.

As I have mentioned before, best no to pi55 anyone off, however frustrating it is here, just bite your tongue and be "sabar" and suck it up and don't do anything that relies on common sense or fairness from anyone else. Jealousy is your biggest competitor here.

I very much doubt that diving instructor is a job that you can get a work permit for. Remember all the fuss last year about chiropractors not being allowed work permits and getting deported for having the wrong job title. Of course that started because someone died but then it got applied to all the chiropractors at once; not just the dodgy one.

In fact you are only really supposed to get a job here that no Indonesian can do, and train someone to replace you asap, in theory
